skateismy
Hi, i have recently bought a turntable and connected it to my studio monitors (which i already owned at that point) through a phono preamp. The problem i am having is, that even when i turn the speakers to the lowest volume, they are still quite loud, which is fine when i want to listen to music by myself, but too loud as soon as i want to have background music of simply want to listen to music late at night without disturbing my flatmates. My setup goes as follows: Project Debut Carbon turntable RCA - RCA Cable Project Phono Box S RCA - RCA Cable (plugged into the unbalanced input of the speaker, since i use the XLR input for digital music) KRK Rokit 6 Studio monitors Thanks in advance for any advice
Tardcore
Your phono preamp should have some gain settings. Can you confirm it's set to the lowest setting? Also, please list the input impedance/capacitance settings you are using. Assuming you're using the 2m Red that comes stock with the Debut Carbon, recommended settings are: Recommended load resistance - 47 kOhm Recommended load capacitance - 150-300 pF Edited November 7, 2016 by Tardcore A-Bon

slinch
19 minutes ago, skateismy said: yes they are at their lowest setting So you're saying that if you turn down the volume all the way, they are completely quiet and make no sound at all, but if you turn the knob just a fraction, it is too loud? Because I read this as you turning the volume knob all the way down and it is still too loud, which shouldn't really be the case, right? (Though they weirdly mark it as -30db, so maybe it doesn't completely close down) And just so we're on the same page, we're talking about this knob, right? slinch
That's a really strange design decision if you ask me. If that's the case, your best option is to get a standalone volume control, on the cheap you can grab something like this.

circuit bored records
I think I have some sage advice for the problem of studio monitors with preamp always too loud if you just take a moment to start ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT AND PARTY EVERY DAY I think your trouble will be over
ethereal
I had this same issue when I used KRK's, just grab a in-line volume control like this and you should be good http://www.crutchfield.com/p_142RLC/EFX-Remote-Level-Control.html?tp=3091&awkw=133761554425&awat=pla&awnw=g&awcr=70489238545&awdv=c
