casey
It seems like Mono records (esp. from the '60s/'70s) go for so much more $$$ than Stereo records. Probably a stupid question (and at least one that can probably be answered by a visit to wikipedia) but what's the difference and why are the Mono more valuable? kyle
Mono records were typically pressed in far fewer numbers, hence the higher prices mono versions of the LPs can fetch on ebay. As for the difference between mono and stereo, the sound from mono comes from one channel, where stereo is two channels.
xxmartinxx
There is also a sect of audiophiles who believe that mono is superior sounding to stereo.
danthemjfan23
every time i see the word audiophiles, the first thing that comes to mind is a 43 year old guy getting all creepy with a really young record. it makes me laugh every time. then i immediately think to myself "dan you're going to be 22 years old in less than two weeks, it's time to grow up" and i feel real shitty about myself for like 2 minutes, but then i laugh again cause seriously that shit's funny to me. lostatsea
I can definately say that I have a bunch of mono records that I love to listen to. There is something about them. I like stereo too
manicdogbert
mono versions of some albums have different mixes than the stereo pressings. A perfect example is the first Pink Floyd album
voodooramen
I actually prefer the mono version of pet sounds to the stereo mix by a LONG margin
manicdogbert
pet sounds was only mixed in stereo recently. Brian Wilson always mixed in mono because he was deaf in one ear.
voodooramen
Yeah I know it's more recent, but I think the stereo mix is pretty bad in comparison. Didn't know about the deafness though, thats interesting.

willbratt
I don't have any mono LPs, but those who do, do you also have a mono cartridge?
tim
This thread would be better if it were about which the better Paul Westerberg album is.
