give me ideas on places to see, places to go, cities to visit, cities to avoid, tips, etc.

Natalie and I are going there for 2 weeks in June, most likely backpacking and what not, staying at hostels most likely, hotels rarely. Cities we are planning so far, Rome, Milan and Florance, but give us suggestions maybe in southern Italy? or wherever! help :)

I think were most likely staying the northern part, were going to germany to see my mom's family for a few days at the very end before coming home, so that makes more travel sense...

i think day trips from Florance is a plan, I think were planning on going to Lucca where my dad's family is from for one day.

We really want to take a trip up the coast of Italy while were there, any ideas on that?

I've been to Rome and Florence twice and Venice once. I hit all three this summer while backpacking and Florence is by far my least favorite city. It's cool to see for a day, maybe two, but it's not worth staying in for longer. Venice is cool but like Florence, it's not a place I would stay for an extended period of time. If you do, try and check out the other parts of Venice like Lido beach, the place where they make glass, etc.

I have to go to class now but I'll reply later with what hostels we stayed in. The one in Rome was my favorite.

Here's my hostel info. We booked it all on hostelworld.com btw.

In Rome we stayed at the Freedom Traveller. It was probably the best place I stayed at on the entire trip (Besides Palmers Lodge in London) and it's set up similar to a hotel. There are common bathrooms but they're in good shape and the rooms are nice as well. The location is great because it's like 2 blocks from the train station and it's maybe a 5 minute walk from most tourist attractions. They also have free pizza and beer on Tuesday's. http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/FreedomTraveller-Rome-761

In Florence we stayed at the Eurostudent Home. I have mixed feelings about this place but I would suggest it. I think my friend hated it but it was an interesting experience. It's run by 2 guys who are real nice and very interactive with the people that stay there. They also cook dinner and breakfast every day. The cons are that if it's busy, the rooms are filled with up to 10 cots and they're mixed gender. So if you're going with your girlfriend, it's not very intimate. They also charged extra for the "free food and bed sheets" listed on their hostelworld page. I heard too that the guys own a few more hostels located around the city. Supposidly if the one i stayed in is booked, they move you to another place with barely anyone there. So for social reasons, that may cause some problems. They also had community bathrooms but since they didn't supply towels, I didn't shower for the time I was there. http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/Eurostudenthome-Florence-13432

Unfortunately, I don't remember where I stayed in Venice. I searched Hostelworld but nothing looks familiar. I also have a feeling that my friend changed where we were staying that the last minute and booked the hostel through a different site. It was a pretty decent hostel though and it was right near one of the squares and the main canal.

I also went to Pompeii the first time I went to Italy. It was a great day trip from Rome and we got to see Naples. I'd recommend trying to get a train or set up a tour to get there. I haven't been to Milan but I've heard very mixed reviews, mostly on the negative side. Next time I go back, I'm going to focus my trip on the islands because they look incredible.

If you want to read up on my trip to get more ideas on what to do, my friend kept a detailed blog throughout our journey. Here are the entries for our Italy stops.

When in Rome, try not to stay in a place near the Termini Station. It's loud, and a lot of crime goes down right around there. We stayed closer to St. Peter's Basilica and it's much more quiet/calm/safe.
