thomas
I'd just buy a router that is DD-WRT compatible, install it, then use the router as a repeater, and that should up the signal strength.

thomas
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php That site should have a list, and everything you need to know. It's pretty easy, most routers it's just using the webgui to upgrade the firmware, some require some external programs to do it, but even then it's still easy. I'm sure you can find a cheap $20-30 router that works with dd-wrt. I got a Linksys WRT54Gv4 off ebay for $20 used, and it's an excellent router with dd-wrt. circlingvultures
What is the reasoning behind my computer always dropping the internet? I'm on a laptop and it seems like every other or third week I have a day or two in a row where it says "local only". Do I need to have something replaced on the modem upstairs? Its driving me nuts. thomas
Is it only your laptop doing it, or does eveything drop the signal at the same time? At my old house I used to always lose internet, but could still communicate with the router but could never figure out what was wrong. Eventually I got the cable company to replace the line to my house, and that fixed the problem. I think my old wire was letting water in, but not enough to affect my TV signal just all the internet signals.
circlingvultures
I'm not sure. My brother is wired in and I'm downstairs. Ill have to ask if he is currently having a problem. There have been instances in the past where I dropped and he still had it. I'm literally in the room below his too.
thomas
The router could be dying if it still works wired, but not wirelessly.
tommytumult
I used to have troubles with my router with the stock firmware and with a custom one until I put tomato on it, now that it's rock solid stable. Also, it is possible to hook your wireless router up to the other one with a wire. On yours, you'd have to disable DHCP and it should work. kirbypuckett
Chance the channel it's going out on. I think most routers default to 6 or 7. I was having problems with mine and frequent drops. There were like 10 other routers within range. I assume they were all on 6. I changed mine to a higher one and I've had no problems since. thomas
I know I had a lot better stability when I switched to a high channel as well. We have like 5 cordless phones in the house, and when they were in use the signal strength would get low, the microwave also used to randomly cause the same problem.
