firebird1
I was asking myself earlier today while driving... The oldest I have is an Alan Parsons Project one, called Tales Of Mystery And Imagination, grantly inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. It was originally released in 1975, but I'm not sure if the colored version was released the same year... What about you guys? What's the oldest colored vinyl you possess or heard something about? gojira
http://www.tefteller.com/html/45s_page1.html A ton of early soul and rhythm & blues 45s on colored vinyl. http://www.tefteller.com/html/78_colored_page1.html and from the same site a few colored 78s. Nothing has ever made me more jealous than when I first found his page.
mclz
back in the day they used to make the 45s a different colored record depended on the genre, but the oldest color record I own is the first squeeze record on red vinyl from 1978. casey
The Rolling Stones' Let it Bleed was pressed on red vinyl. Album came out in '69, not sure if red pressing was from that year, though.

firebird1
Holy crap!!! Gojira! The first link you posted is awesome!!!!! Colored 78's!??!?!? I would have NEVER believed it! Are they still on sale somewhere?
gojira
I see red 78s around sometimes. It was pretty common. I don't know much more than that. I've avoided buying 78s cuz tracking down old soul 45s is already enough strain on my wallet.
firebird1
Yeah I agree... BUT, if you ever see that Alberta Hunter 78s somewhere...PM me in a hurry!

gojira
Early sixties Jamaican promo-copy colored vinyl damn near brings me to tears. I don't know what I'd do if I ever saw this stuff in person.
firebird1
Early sixties???? We may have a winner here!! What are the bands on them?
gojira
The one on the left is one of the first sides by The Wailers the right is Don Drummond on one side and Roland Alphonso on the other. It's funny as much as I covet these orig press ska 45s on colored wax I get all pissy when I get reissues on color.
firebird1
Hahaha I may sound stupid asking this...but was Bob Marley a member of The Wailers from the very beginning of the band?
mclz
back in the day they used to make the 45s a different colored record depended on the genre. That was more the label color than the wax color. "When RCA Victor launched the 7" 45 rpm record, they initially had eight musical classifications (pop, country, blues, classical, children's, etc.) each with not only its own uniquely colored label but with a corresponding color vinyl." gojira
I'd forgotten about the RCA series. I thought you meant industry-spanning practices. HahahaI may sound stupid asking this...but was Bob Marley a member of The Wailers from the very beginning of the band? Ya he was part of the original group. scottheisel
I've seen some old children's record from the 40s that was pressed on red vinyl.
chiefwahoo
Colored vinyl has been around for as long as they've been making singles: Today marks the 60th anniversary of the 45 rpm record. RCA/Victor put out the first one, Eddy Arnold's "Texarkana Baby" (She's my Texarkana baby/ Do I love here? Lawdy, lawd / Her pappy came from Texas / and her mom from Arkansas) with "Bouquet of Roses" on the B-side, on March 31, 1949. http://www.arktimes.com/blogs/rockcandy/2009/03/

chiefwahoo
There's a lot of old records like that on colored vinyl. Popular music pre-rock n roll isn't worth much at all.
stefan8675309
pink floyd put animals out on pink, which is pretty badass
kerry
I think it's at my parent's house but I have a clear rainbow colored sampler from whenever stereo sound was invented. Came with one of my great grandma's turn tables. Probably the oldest record I have, and all it is, is sound effects.

kyleserlington
as for colored vinyl i own my oldest stuff is probably from Lookout Records. i have MTX Love is Dead on Blue and then i have a couple Groovie Ghoulies albums on colored vinyl (pink and green ones, i dunno if they're 1st pressing ones though) i also have a couple replacements albums on colored vinyl, but i mail ordered them directly from Twin/Tone like 2 years ago, and i highly doubt they're originials as well
