The amount of desensitization in our society is alarming. I'm not faulting any of you for it, because I'm just as guilty, but it's just sad that we as humans don't react to tragic events and violence like we probably should.

Imagine what it must be like for people in other countries.

i agree it does happen way too often, but with something like this there really is nothing that can be done, short of taking and destroying every single firearm in the country. They are freak accidents. In this case, they think it had something to do with the guy not taking his medication. But, because these shooters continue to kill themselves at the end of their spree, no one knows why these things happen. It's all speculation. I'm sure if there was some way to stop them, we would be doing it, but we dont know whats going to happen until it's already going on

What can you possibly do to prevent some random person from taking a gun into a public place and start shooting? What if I wanted to do it right now, for no reason at all? What would YOU do to prevent it?

first and foremost, before anyone attacks me let me make my feelings clear, senseless incidents like this are terrible and my heart goes out to anyone affected by this, condolences to those who have been involved.

but to address the wider issue, gun laws in th US are ridiculous, i know it's a part of the constitution and everything but seriously, selling guns in wallmart equals trouble. i have some difficulty comprehending the argument that nothing can be done to stop 'random' incidents such as this from occurring. controling the supply of weapons surely means controlling the missuse of weapons? people have a responsibility in a democracy to make their voices heard and make a contribution to policy by indiciating how they feel about important issues. so why not lobby the NRA? why not lobby the government? why not make a significant contribution rather than just espousing the same old argument that nothing can be done? things like this happen essentially because people allow them to happen. how many times will it take before a lesson is learnt?

well if it was as simple as someone on the internet just coming up the with answer as easy as that there wouldn't be a problem in the first place, the solutions would be obvious to us all. recognising there is a problem is the first step towards solving it, would you not agree? apathy towards the free availability of weapons in the US is a significant issue in my opinion.

also, if you read my post again, you'll notice that i mentioned lobbying the government and the NRA, and making your voice heard in terms of tightening up firearms policy and trying to make a difference through democracy. reallistically that's is the only way any sort of change is going to ever come about; there is no 'here's how it can be fixed' answer.

just out of curiosity, what kind of gun laws do they have in the UK? At some point, my girlfriend and I (hopefully, by the time this happens, she'd be my wife) want to move to Europe because we heard it was safer. She wants Denmark and I want England. The point of this is, what makes the UK safer as far as gun control?

well the ownership of handguns was outlawed completely quite a few years back (i couldn't tell you exactly when off the top of my head) and ownership of weapons such as shotguns require a licence and a full police check, on top the the requirement to keep the weapon and ammunition in seperate securely locked safes. even some higher powered air guns require licences and criminal checks in order for you to purchase them. you also have to buy weapons from specialist dealerships (as opposed to supermarkets etc), who themselves have to undergo criminallity checks.

obviously the illegality of hand guns mean there is significantly less instances of weapons related crimes as handguns only reallistically have a function in terms of aggressive use. i would suggest (although again i'm not sure of any figures) that the rate of gun related crime in the UK is significantly lower than in the US as a result of this law. obviously it still happens, but nowhere near as frequently as in america. hope that helped you somewhat.

My friend's brother got shot. Being 15 years old, in a nice, suburban setting, this is probably the shittiest thing that's happened. It's awful that some pussy would go into a place where people are trying to LEARN and shoot innocent people. All they were trying to do was learn things so they could contribute to society, and this kid just shot people. It's horrible. Kill yourself, but don't take innocent people with you. Or better yet, don't kill yourself at all...Get help.

England's estimated population as of 2006: 50,762,900

The Unites States' estimated population as of 2006: 303,375,000

Also, as of 2005, the United States' murder rate was 5.9 per 100,000 people. The most recent statistic for England (combined with Wales but separated from the U.K. as a whole) is 1.62 per 100,000 people, taken in 2004.

Neither of those numbers are even in the top 30 for homicide rates, though. The US is 37 and England/Wales is 76. Just be glad you don't live in El Salvador, Jamaica or Guatemala. Yikes!

Anyway, my point is, obviously you have less gun crime (and less crime overall) than the U.S. -- your population is a sixth of ours. Considering that, it says something that our murder rate is only approximately three times yours, not six times yours. Obviously we have some things under control.

How about gun control?

Fuck the "right to bear arms". We don't deserve it.
