i did this for around 2 years back in the early 00s.

its kind of embarrassing and your hosts usually dont like it, so all i can say is, be respectful, don't stick around long, and try not to eat their food.

either this, or prepare to lose some friends.

hostels, shelters, or salvation armies are a much better idea if you ask me.

people are a bit more hesitant to help people nowadays. it's more about their inconvenience rather than help someone in need. i use to give up my apt for weeks on end with no problems. once a stranger (well he was at first) stayed with me for free for 4 months. he didn't give me money for rent, but he cooked every night and cleaned and washed dishes. Unfortunately, no one i've lived with is as hospitable as me so.

Hostels are a great way to meet people. A lot of them have shared rooms, like quads, doubles, what have you, so you can meet a lot of like-minded folks.

Being courteous is the biggest tip like other people said, but if this counts as a tip, save a little emergency cash stash for a couple nights if at all possible. There isn't much worse than thinking your going to couch surf, striking out and walking around the city until the sun comes up. Done that in Montreal a few times and shit gets old real quick.
