Mechanics always crack me, I do not know everything about cars but between my Grandpa and one of my room mates I am surrounded by a butt ton of knowledge. Its funny when I go into a car place for an oil change and the mechanics try to talk me into a $900 repair....I normally listen to them and then "lol" to myself after acting interested in what they are saying.

Last time they tried talking me into a new exhaust manifold for my Jeep, because it is rusted......note to everyone here they are cast iron and will get worn down with a little rust....but believe me you will know when you need a new exhaust manifold.

Mechanics = joke

And those 4.0 liter Jeeps are super easy to work on.  A blind midget could replace a exhaust manifold on one of those.  Coming from a fellow Jeep owner.  :D

I've been lucky and never ran into douche bag mechanics.  I've either always done it myself or take it to a guy I know personally that won't screw me over.

my 4.0L Jeep quit cranking this week.   i don't know shit about engine repair, but I do know that I can't afford to get it towed, nor to have anybody look at it yet....i hate not knowing what's wrong...feel like if I at least knew that, I could possibly try and work on it myself

Def test the battery, the issue I had with my Jeep when I first got it was a $15 cable.....I recommended it to the dealer to check the connections/solenoid. Instead they blew off my advice and put a new starter/battery/shifter all at their expense. By the end of the process they gave me $1300 in parts to find out it was a $15 cable :P

But if it doesn't crank all the time (assuming sometimes when it sits it will finally turnover) it is most likely a cheap fix.

If you don't want a code reader, most stores (Auto-Zone, Pep Boys, etc) will scan it for free, then just write down the code and google the shit out of it.  Hang on to that 4.0l man, seriously one of the best engines every produced.  Sure they drink gas like its going out of style but they take a beating.  I like the 3.6 in my Wrangler, but that 4.0 is just bulletproof.
