  1. Whats everyone's opinion on Larry Wilmore though? Obviously not another Colbert.....

I like Wilmore's show. I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't have the "range" that the Colbert Report had (dozens of recurring segments, characters, like a different show every night), but I'm getting used to it.

I also dig how it's not always a funny show. They can get serious without it feeling out of place, and they're not constantly beating you over the head with the "comedy" aspect of it.

  2. Yeah. B's great album lost to what a lot of people think is also a pretty great album That shouldn't diminish her "monumental feat of music" at all. Which album you like better is a matter of opinion, which is why Beck won.

Having your work nominated for AOTY is such an honor. Winning is the cherry, but doesn't necessarily define one album as quantifiably better than another.

Also, I feel like Kanye/Beyonce's fans are taking this as "Beck's album will be remembered, and Beyonce's won't", which is total bullshit. I still haven't heard a peep from Beyonce regarding her losing. I think she's just a mature enough person who doesn't need to be handed an award to feel gratified for her art.

I liked Beck's album the most out of those that were nominated, so I can't speak to this directly, but on the other side of the aisle, Steely Dan beat Kid A in 2001. In my opinion, a great example of the Grammy's snubbing a clear winner by honoring veterans that they refused to honor when they had the chance. But, I mean... people fucking revere that album today, Grammy or no Grammy.

If Beyonce had the better album, in 15 years, people will talk about it the way people talk about Kid A today. And in 20 years, I'm sure she'll put out a mediocre album, long out of her prime, and then the Grammy's can try and make up for their mistake by being fundamentally dishonest to the spirit of what they're supposed to be doing. Same goes for Radiohead, probably.

  3. Objectively, yes. He has sold millions of albums, received a staggering number of accolades, and has influenced countless artists to come.

Subjectively, it is my personal opinion that his music is mediocre.

But I do agree that it's his art that should be important, not his outrageous media antics.

  4. Because he's really good at what he does.

    I respectfully disagree.

Michael Jackson is still insanely popular and that guy was a monster.

    I agree.

    Well, Kanye isn't wrong

Do you think Beck should have given up his award to Beyoncé, like Kanye demanded? I hope not.

But hey, let's not pretend that Grammy night should be taken all that seriously anyway. It is a joke. People are just pissed at Kanye's (recurring) total lack of respect for other people. Even if you agree with Kanye, you gotta see what childish bullshit this is. It's not an "artistry" thing, it's a manners thing.

That said, Beck handled this like a boss.

  5. I told him again it was definitely not gatefold (and sent him the Wikipedia link for 'gatefold') and he agreed and said he would fix the descriptions of the vinyl.

    It is NOT gatefold

Well, it is what it is.

But it kinda sounds like this guy (who owns a record store, and probably ships hundreds of records every year) was totally unclear on the definition of what a "gatefold" is.

    For real?

    Oh, well.
