Don't listen to vinyl addict, you don't need to check the VTA, it is factory set and since you still have the original cartridge on there it will be fine. And since you cannot change the VTA anyway, you're more likely to damage something than to do any good.

Don't worry about the table being perfectly level either, if it's uneven it will have a negative effect on the turntable bearing in the long run, but it definitely won't affect how your records sound.

The tonearm moves slightly left/right and up/down during play because records aren't perfect. It's totally fine and you don't need to worry about it.

The "bright" sound, from the setup you listed, could very well be the sony's fault. If it's an old receiver from the late 80s or early 90s (a model number would help), those often sound overly bright. The ortofon cartridge also isn't known as a well balanced performer, but it's to be expected from an entry level cart.

Relapse have been known to ship stuff really early, especially on reissues of existing material.

Just got all of this put together. I still need to upgrade my speakers and receiver but I'm loving what I have so far. Its a Thorens TD 165 with Dynamat treatment underneath and a few other mods. I added a Rega RB202 tonearm and Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. I'm also using a Little Bear Preamp, some Dayton Speakers and an older Sony receiver. I had an LP120 before this and it was good but I'm liking the sound of this one better.

Hopefully we get an option for a different skin, this one is a little hard on the eyes.

Finally got "ToG" and "Through Silver..." on oxblood a few weeks ago after a pretty long wait.  They were shipped in this huge box, which was kind of weird.
    Both records sound excellent.
I have to say, though, while the actual packaging was pretty killer I'm much more a fan of the original artwork on both these records and not really into the new/revised art they did for the represses.

Yeah, this is how I had it set up back then:

That Marantz on the left weighs 26kg.

It's definitely not the sturdiest of tables, but you should be fine. You only have to make sure that you don't go way over 25kg one one surface. Currently I have four LACKs stacked and the total weight they carry is around 38kg. At one point I had a 25kg amplifier on a single LACK table (for about two years) and everything was fine.

    pity about the Rega.

6ohm speakers on an 8 ohm output is fine. 4 ohm speakers on an 8 ohm output is a problem but only if you run at very high volumes for a long time as the amp have to work much harder to drive the 4 ohm load

Yeah you're right, I was reading something about Nad amps while posting and the lack of the phono stage was stuck in my head for some reason...
Buying used can be a risk for sure, though you can minimize that risk by doing some research and buy from a reputable seller or a hifi store.
The pioneer and denon entry level integrateds aren't really worth considering in my opinion, they perform well under what you can get for the price. The onkyo 9050 would be a worthwhile contender though. But it's really impossible to talk about "sound signature" here, every component has it's specific strengths and drawbacks and the only way to get an idea of how a particular combination might perform at your place is to go and listen to as much as you can in a specialised store. The experience will be extremely valuable as you'll get to connect your own perception to the sound described in magazines and online. So not only will you actually hear for yourself what you like best, it'll also be easier for you to know what to expect from particular equipment in the future.
