  1. anyone got tips on lesser known ways to make fest awesome? first year i couch surfed, second year i did the plaza. should i try and go for a flee bag hotel this year? ideally i'd like to crash at a house with other festers. first year i was with a few college kids and the only one who went to fest was antisocial.
  2. got my income tax in so i got one of the white misprints but it was a really spur of the moment decision. i hope it isn't too mangled. was the media mail option only for the states? i shipped to canada and the whole thing was 20 bucks which is still a great deal if it isn't a disaster.
  3. yeah, i've been told almost the exact same thing. i think i'm known in my circle of friends as "the funny one" and i often find myself at the head of group conversations, making everyone else laugh. but no one seems to find that compelling. i've tried online dating off and on for the last year but it's just as frustrating. when i don't put a photo up i get tons of messages based just on my profile, and as soon as i put up a picture they stop sending or replying to my messages. there was a few people who i had a great online conversation with so i decided to meet them in person and i think they were disappointed in how i looked when they met me. i live in a small city so the well is basically dry.
  4. ladies i need some more advice. i don't meet a lot of new people, and when i do it's usually at a party or a friend's house. and whenever i meet someone that i think is interesting that i'd like to get to know better, they talk to me until they meet one of my better looking friends and focus all of their attention on them. it's happened countless times. i think i am a funny and interesting person, but iam not that physically attractive compared to my friends, and i have resigned to the fact that anyone i have a crush on is going to have a crush on one of my friends instead. it's really hard to have my hopes crushed time after time. what do i do?
  5. stoked for my annual pilgrimage. anyone from AB/SK/MB going?
  6. there's so much good stuff here! can't wait to listen to all of the bands i haven't heard before. but let's all be really careful when we talk about the gender of the members of the bands we like. in this instance, we are respectfully discussing bands with women members who rock. but all too often women in punk bands have a rough deal. i often see people posting "i don't like female singers", which is itself a sexist statement, because it assumes that all female singers sound the same. i used to be one of those people. until i started to take a nuanced look at my musical preferences. now i say "i don't usually like bands with high pitched vocals" instead of automatically dismissing a band that has a female singer. it's eliminating little micro-agressions like these that create a more inclusive scene! we should also do our research and be aware of how musicians self-identify. don't wanna mis-gender anyone! also, little big league - these are good people is my favourite album of last year.
  7. yeah, i definitely think i'll mention to her that i am hanging out with him, but i don't know if i'll tell her that i am interested in him. she's so closed off that she very well could still be into him, and going for beer with him doesn't have to be anything but friendly. i don't necessarily believe in any "girl code", but she called shotgun first, so she gets to sit in the front seat.
  8. i absolutely approve a duff/carter reunion. hey ladies, got time for some advice? i was at a party with my best friend and we met a few guys (friends of friends) that we've been hanging out with for the last few months. i could tell that she had eyes for one of them in particular, and they've hung out together a few times. i was really supportive of it, because i've had a crush on her for years, but she's straight, and i thought that if she started dating someone i'd stop holding out that she would suddenly become queer overnight and fall madly in love with me. the problem: i thought he was really rad when i met him, but i let that go so my friend could go for him, but now she keeps telling me that she isn't sure if she sees it going anywhere with him, and she isn't sure if she really likes him all that much... so i went and visited him at work, and asked if he wanted to go for a beer (without my friend) and i feel like maybe i'm going behind her back? should i have asked her first? even though they are barely a thing and she said she isn't even into it. i guess i'm just worried she'd be mad at me for almost pushing her to date this guy, and then me turning around and asking him out.
  9. i just finished it 5 minutes ago. this episode was another example of brilliant dialogue writing. total standout, along with the scene in the first season where hannah and marny have a blowout. anyone else get a distinct wes anderson feel the first 5 minutes?
  10. thanks :-) less of a deep cut, more of a sneeze gone wrong.
  11. hopefully taking the train from saskatoon to montreal for this. i was hoping the lillingtons were going to play fest last year, but this'll do.

Random things you want us to know about you: every year i travel to fest from central canada... by greyhound. it takes 4+ days EACH way. and well worth it. started lurking here because i don't have any local friends who listen to the same music as i do. i'd love it if you sent me a message if you wanted to talk about punk, hockey, or both!
  13. i am a big fan of this show. having burned through top of the lake, arne dahl, the fall, forbrydelsen, thekilling, bron/broen, etc. i was desperate for more of the same. my wild theory that i haven't seen mentioned before: it's clear that one of the main themes of this series is that man is capable of horrible, monstrous evils. i believe that is the purpose of the allusions to the king in yellow, and the forbidden book that drives men mad when they read it. they are driven insane through learning the truth of what man is capable of... and that is exactly what happens to rust as he immerses himself deeper into the mystery of the murders, the drug underworld, the memory of what happened to has daughter, and the fate of hart and his family. as for specific plot, i believe that the "satanic cult" is a elaborate scheme concocted by the tuttle family to scare people towards the church and further the christian cause. it got way out of hand, and people started legitimately following their made-up beliefs, and they just let it continue, while using the positive press to their advantage.
