I'm starting a label soon and I have a couple questions.

    1. How much do bands make when a label presses a record? Let's say you're pressing a run of 500 for an active artist: do the artist get a portion of the records or a portion of the sales made on the record?

    2. Same as above but for an artist that is no longer around.

    3. At lastly, has anyone tried the Pirate Press $2000 for 500 12" LPs special. (Includes all Mastering, Plating, Full Color Labels and Jackets (w/ 3mm Spine) on Upgraded 16pt. Stock!). Is it worth it?

    Thanks!

I help unsigned/diy artists sell their vinyl. They decide the price. These particular 7"s you're speaking of are 4-song EPs (part of a 4-part series), sleeves/lyric sheets handmade by the band, shipped here internationally and comes with free digital download. Prices vary depending on the band and what part of the world they come from. We also have 7"s for $6.

I'm working on putting together a list of online-only vinyl record shops & I'm asking the Vinyl Collective community for your input. I've noticed a growing number of online-only shops, some with their own specialties, and as vinyl fandom continues to increase I find it important to get the word out about these shops. Of course I know of a lot of them, but I'm always learning about new ones which tells me there are a lot more out there most of us are not aware of.

    Here's the criteria:
    - The shop's focus must be on newly released vinyl (carrying used is fine, just as long as most of their stock is new vinyl)
    - No labels, unless they distribute non-label stuff as well.
    - Obviously, sites like ebay, discogs, etc. do not count

What are your favorite online vinyl shops, and do they have a specialty?

I don't know what reason you have to trust the "industry person" but when somebody tells me "these are all fake, but here's £200", I get incredibly suspicious.

They seem to be test presses. They go for like 6X the normal prices of retail standard versions

If a pink Aloha showed up on eBay I would bet it would hit $50-100 easily.
Just because none have been listed doesn't mean there isn't demand for them.

But basically you can complain about the price all you want....but 300 other people didn't and it sold out fast.
If it was over priced the stock would still be there.

hey guys, thanks for the responses. I am aware that Yelp (though more of a North American focus) has a rather large following for vinyl collectors and obviously VC , well is VC. Hard to top a site with such a dedicated following of vinyl fanatics ;-)

For those that feel such a database of record stores may be of use, please feel free to add you local shop. Or if you have questions/comments/suggestions concerns. Feel free to drop me a line .

I like records. And yea, I'm probably a little obsessed and have been for some time. But dammit, I don't need records reflected in every aspect of my life. Just buy a $10 clock.

I don't understand the hate, especially coming from a community that values buying multiple copies of the same album (variant collectors). Not saying anything against that, but I just think it's a bit hypocritical to be bashing this guy/thread because he likes collecting/preserving the original packaging. After all, isn't the physical aspect of vinyl one of the reasons we all enjoy vinyl?

But again, back on topic, I saw a video a while ago of a guy going through some albums he bought, all were old LPs that still had the shrink wrap on them (opened on the sides). They were all still in perfect condition. Granted, none were gatefolds.
