So I had a guy buy an expensive record from me at the end of January. Upon his receipt of the item, he claimed that it had a seam split and a dinged corner and filed a claim through paypal. Paypal decided that he could return the item for a refund. An empty box got to me on Friday, but Paypal refunded him already because the tracking # was delivered. I've contacted Paypal to appeal the resolution decision. I was going to wait on the mail fraud complaint but Paypal asked me to file one. Anyone deal with this before? Any advice?

    In my experience, you're fucked.

That being said, there should be package info associated with the tracking number.   If he really sent an empty box, it should have weighed a few ounces at best at the Post Office when he checked it in.  Does the label on the box list a weight?  That's the only evidence for your side that I can think of.  If it really is only a few ounces, it's worth submitting that - in photo form - to Paypal as part of the dispute.

Edit:  The weight is important because the lightest record I've ever sent was maybe 14oz.  A 2xLP would be more like 1.8 pounds.  What kind of record did you originally ship?

  3. This is why bundles with minor items like socks or patches is dumb...once the retailer throws something that is no longer considered "media" in a box, it no longer qualifies for Media Mail.  Get a $3 pair of socks and end up eating $10 extra in shipping for them.  Not a great idea....it frustrates the shit out of me when albums are only available in bundles.

Uh oh, I ordered a copy from amazon to get free shipping earlier today... would mean it'll be the US copy :\

I hope I luck out and it doesn't have too much noise (hate that), but at least amazon is good about returns if something is wrong with it

I got an Amazon copy and it sounds great, extremely quiet.  I was cautious though and scissored the sleeves apart so that I could lift the records out without them dragging on the paper, then brushed them and put in poly sleeves.

My only complaint is that my C/D LP is a bit dished.  Hopefully I can compress it down a bit under a book.

At the risk of further backlash just to explain some of our logic in releasing this, it was brought to our attention that it was attracting ridiculous prices on ebay which we wanted to try and diffuse. Also if you pre ordered the black you're paying alot less than this version. The clear is being sold at the normal price rather than with any pre order discount. We could have waited to release the clear variant but we are in the process of slowing things down with the label due to other commitments so we had to do it now.

TIL £3 is "alot less" for a non-colored, higher-run variant.

What you could have done here is announced the clear version was going to exist before the black shipped, so people had a choice in the matter.

Unless you're planning to flip, I don't see the reason to be upset. In this case it seems they misread the demand and are being cool about offering another variant. I like that

    - 2nd pressing: Limited edition of 750 tri-color striped vinyl (alternate color). Limit 2 per customer.
    - 1st pressing: Limited edition of 500 tri-color striped vinyl. Limit 2 per customer.  SOLD OUT

Indie Store Exclusive: Limited edition of 700 translucent yellow-orange vinyl, available to all participating independent record stores on April 6th, 2018

I think for me the problem is that we only know one song off this album.  We all hope it will be brilliant, but I've certainly been burned by artists before.  If you buy something limited and you don't like it, it's like a little insurance policy that you can make your money back because of its rarity, because guaranteed some people love it, even if it ends up not for me.  The more variants, especially previously-unannounced ones like this one, lessen the guarantee that you could be easily rid of it if you want and not take a loss.  It's also nice to know that something in your collection has value; I doubt anyone would disagree with that.

All that being said, the single is amazing and I fully expect to love this album.  And I could certainly cancel my order right now if I was really concerned about the money.  Like I said before, it just feels deceptive on the part of the label.  It's nice for people who missed the post this morning though.

I don't see how this is analogous really. The 2814 was billed as a limited variant when the only previous pressing was black, and then they decided after it sold out that they were just gonna make a shitload more of that same variant. With this, the original limited exclusive is still the most rare variant and there were at least two other known variants before they announced the second exclusive.

Oh I thought the second pressing was the exact same colorway.  Looks like they changed it slightly.  I guess it just feels like some labels/stores try to build up a frenzy making people feel like they are going to miss out if they don't buy immediately, which is pretty disingenuous if you're just going to immediately say "hey, here are more actually!" once the initial run sells out.  It doesn't really affect me but the sales tactic definitely rubs me the wrong way, like a sleazy car dealer.

Cheaper for me by 1.5 quid as a Canadian to go through Banquet, which did not charge me VAT.

Hmm this is very interesting.  Now that I look at my TVS order, it looks like it is cheaper than it should be.  I wonder if it was a fuckup somehow.  Below are screenshots from their website and from my order confirmation.

It seems like something was probably wrong because at least as of today, £34.50 should be more like $47.81 (instead of $39.61 as shown).  I'll take it though :D

    Cheaper at Banquet. https://www.banquetrecords.com/moby/play%3A-the-b-sides/IDIOT62LP2

FWIW, this is *much* better than the Play album, and more in line with other contemporary classics of Euro , jazzy lounge-ambience like Groove Armada, St. Etienne, Tosca and early Airto the point where I bought a copy of this while I will hold out on the VMP Play  reissue, banking that I could swap for it down the road. Between Play and Biggie, VMP are 2/3 on getting me to re-up on a 3 month membership.

It's cheaper at the link OP posted for anyone in the US.  I ordered this a few days ago and the total was $39.61 USD, vs. $46.43 from Banquet.  I think that The Vinyl Store might drop VAT, and Banquet does not.
