cosmonaut
El-P and Mr. Lif are both great. + 1 for the mentions of Saul Williams and POS above. Also, get the whole Wu-Tang back catalog, except Iron Flag.
xjustinxschwierx
what's a good Atmosphere album to grab first? i was told by hardcore fan to get God Loves Ugly...and it's pretty rad. i haven't gotten anything else yet though.
xjustinxschwierx
only rap i can stand:Saul Williams Sage Francis Atmosphere Buddy Wakefield Notorious BIG seriously check out Dalek. they're on Ipecac, Mike Patton from Faith No More/Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, etc...'s label. They're like Noise hip hop...the music is really dense...it's like a wall of sound backing up the rhymes.
kirbypuckett
I'm making a hip-hop mix for P Fresh, I'll post it here when it's ready. The Cool Kids and Kid Sister are the only things that matter right now.
kirbypuckett
Atmosphere is so overrated.
ps
The only hip hop records I will listen to nowadays are: GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords Ghostface Killa - Ironman
cosmonaut
GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords yeah, that's definitely one of the best records of all time, regardless of genre.

ryanjjj
Oh man, I recommend almost all of the things said before me. Especially Atmosphere, Sage, and MURS. Also, check out Busdriver. He's not really your average hip hop artist. Its more abstract hip hop. http://www.myspace.com/busdriver I recommend listening to "Reheated Pop", "Imaginary Places" and "Casting Agents and Cowgirls" but all of his stuff is all over the map so you really need to get alot of it in order to get the gist of it. lechevre
The Streets! www.myspace.com/thestreets Maybe some will say it's not hip hop, but I love it. Talk/rap about serious everyday things (forgetting to return a dvd, no signal on a cell phone, battery dead on said cell phone) not about bitches and hos. Well...I guess everyone tries to get some tail...Um..The myspace player isn't really the best representation, but I would check out A Grand Don't come for free, and The Hardest Way to Make an easy living, Original Pirate material. captainmorgan
Tonedeff. Incidentally the songs he's got up on myspace aren't any of my favorites, but his album Archetype is AMAZING. http://www.myspace.com/tonedeff
monk0nuggets
Definitely check Talib Kweli as someone already mentioned. Also check: Blackstar (Talib's first group which was with Mos Def) Mos Def MF Doom (one of the best MCs I've ever heard) Common (I love his smooth style, though he can be kind of ignorant. Plus, Kanye does produced his last two records)
