aflycon
Brasso metal polish used to be a cure-all product for taking scratches, hazing, abrasions - really any minor damage out of anything from brass to headlight covers. I've read that it's especially useful for taking the haze out of turntable dustcovers. The problem is that in 2008, Brasso's formula was changed to comply with new regulations in the United States. The new formula doesn't do shit for scratches and isn't useful for dustcovers. I've searched far and wide online and can't find anywhere stocking "classic" Brasso (as it isn't produced anymore, it would just be leftover stock of pre-2008 Brasso anyway), nor can I find any sort of consensus on a comparable product. The dust cover on my Philips could really use a good cleaning - it looks more like my smokey copy of Suicidal Tendencies than the clear it came from the factory. Can anybody provide a lead on "classic" Brasso, or recommend a comparable product? Thanks, guys.
aarondltd
Just a few guesses, but gritty toothpaste or a headlight restoration kit or maybe this NOVUS stuff ?
aflycon
Just a few guesses, but gritty toothpaste or a headlight restoration kit or maybe this NOVUS stuff ? Thanks! I haven't seen NOVUS recommended on any of the other sites I've checked, but the reviews seem to be pretty good. I think I'll check it out. aarondltd
I haven't tried it myself but I was bored so I did a search on Amazon. It does seem like it would work, you can even get them separately so if you only have fine scratches it would be NOVUS 2. update: Just read someone say 1 and 2 are "extremely effective"
Guest
My dad uses that novus stuff on his acrylic fish tanks, and it seems to work really well.
mrrom92
I can't speak from personal experience but I've heard great things about the novus for CD/LD repair, which would generally require very fine polishing. That stuff should definitely do the trick for your dustcover.
ChrisWithanF
Supposedly the Brasso from Thailand is the original formula. I've been on the fence about ordering some to decloud my dust cover. Heres an eBay link
aarondltd
This might be handy to know for the Technics SL 1300 sitting here if only it wasn't so corroded. I think the only way deal with that is to take it apart and sand and paint it which seems like a big hassle. That and other work I would want to do to it. pizza face
Was bored before work today and decided hey maybe it's time I clean my thrift shop dust cover seeing as I've had it for over six months already. Bought Meguiar's Plast-X.... Besides a few scratches this thing is shining like a beaut. Wish I took a before picture
