RIP Ornette Coleman

Recommended Posts

Meant to post.

I always heard his name brought up among the greats and it was always implied that he gave Coltrane a run for his money with how he took free jazz to a whole new level. But I'm a much more conventional jazz listener so I avoided him. Big mistake! Didn't start actively listening to him until 2010 or so. The first four albums or so, which are more conventional than his latter-day albums, but still pretty free compared to bop of that era (59-62), are right up there with the quintessential LP's (Blue Train, Kind of Blue, etc). Matter of fact, The Shape of Jazz To Come, is a near perfect album.

Coltrane was influenced by Ornette and pushed in his later era by the man.
