How to connect new turntable to vintage Marantz receiver - HELP!

Recommended Posts

First off, thank you.

I'm a newbie to stereo equipment and am unsure how to connect an Audio Technica LP60 to a Marantz 2235B. The TT has red and white RCA output cables while the receiver has left and right inputs for the phono channel (both black). Same goes for trying to hook up my ipod via AUX. I searched google but everyone is hooking up old turntables to new stereos, not the opposite. Thank you!!!

Is that right though? White is left and red is right? I tried doing that and the sound was terrible for some reason, very muffled. I just got this receiver and it sounds fantasticccc when it's on FM radio, but when I plugged in my phone with the auxiliary it sounded awful. Can't understand why.

I switched the turntable from line in to phono and plugged it into the phono input and it's still a bit quieter than FM. I'll upload a link to a youtube video I took of it and a pic of the back of the receiver. Thank you guys a ton for helping me. Want to get this beauty sounding great!

The phono input on your receiver is a preamp, you don't need a separate one. It is normal for the phono input to be lower, as someone said, you're over thinking things. Just turn it up louder when listening to records and enjoy.

Can you tell in the video I posted? I'd say like...30%. How do I shut off the preamp on the turntable? All I see is a switch on the back to switch from line in to phono. I have it set to phono. I will start looking into preamps and research them. Thanks for all the help with this.

You have it set up correctly already as long as you are plugged into the phono input on your Marantz. As mentioned above, the receiver has a preamp built in.

Enjoy the music, dont worry about buying a preamp. Save up for a better TT if you enjoy it.
