markaj311
First off, thank you. I'm a newbie to stereo equipment and am unsure how to connect an Audio Technica LP60 to a Marantz 2235B. The TT has red and white RCA output cables while the receiver has left and right inputs for the phono channel (both black). Same goes for trying to hook up my ipod via AUX. I searched google but everyone is hooking up old turntables to new stereos, not the opposite. Thank you!!!
mesi
White is left, Red is right.
Freki
Your turntable has a pre-amp, so you don't want to plug it into the phono inputs. Use any other input (tape, tuner, aux).
markaj311
Is that right though? White is left and red is right? I tried doing that and the sound was terrible for some reason, very muffled. I just got this receiver and it sounds fantasticccc when it's on FM radio, but when I plugged in my phone with the auxiliary it sounded awful. Can't understand why. circuit bored records
Pots could need cleaning, board could be bad, etc. Bottom line is the receiver probably needs to be serviced.
markaj311
I bought it off eBay, fully serviced. I have my ipod playing into Tape 1 and my turntable into Tape 2 and both sound clear now, but much much quieter and not nearly as full sounding as FM radio. Hope I didn't get burned.. Freki
Have you used your turntable with any other amp?
markaj311
Yeah, ive had it hooked up to a newer $150 Sony receiver for a couple years. The TT works well.
vinyl addict
Can you shutoff the preamp on the TT? If so, shut it off and plug the Red/White into the phono out on the receiver. I guarantee the preamp in the receiver is far superior to the preamp in your USB TT.
youspinmeround
You can plug it into the phono but need to turn off the preamp. If that doesn't work, turn the preamp back on and plug it in the other ports and you know the connection with phonograph needs servicing
markaj311
I switched the turntable from line in to phono and plugged it into the phono input and it's still a bit quieter than FM. I'll upload a link to a youtube video I took of it and a pic of the back of the receiver. Thank you guys a ton for helping me. Want to get this beauty sounding great! youspinmeround
I don't think you can get anything g sounding great with a lp60. How much lower is the volume.....you can expect some volume dropout
Guest
That's normal. I have go about 25% more for records on volume, then I do on digital.
markaj311
Hmm.. If that's the case why doesn't my ipodipod plugged into auxiliary sound like the FM channel does?
Tardcore
try Aux in instead of Tape in (for the digital source). Could very well be something wrong with the amp.
youspinmeround
Hmm.. If that's the case why doesn't my ipodipod plugged into auxiliary sound like the FM channel does? Maybe because your ipod also has a volume control You are way overthinking this
markaj311
Haha I had the volume all the way up on the ipod. If you could hear the difference in person you'd know what I mean with this. It's quite a big difference.
vinyl addict
No phono preamp (in LP60 or in the receiver) would mean VERY VERY low volume output. Is this what you are experiencing?
markaj311
Maybe that's what it is. I have never owned a preamp and im new to having a vintage receiver. I plan on getting a 70s Technics SL 1600 soon, would that dismiss my need for a preamp? Thanks vinyl addict.
vinyl addict
No you always need a preamp. Make sure the internal preamp is shut OFF on the turntable. Plug the TT directly into the phono input on your receiver. Is it really that much lower volume than the tuner? 25%? 50%?
markaj311
Can you tell in the video I posted? I'd say like...30%. How do I shut off the preamp on the turntable? All I see is a switch on the back to switch from line in to phono. I have it set to phono. I will start looking into preamps and research them. Thanks for all the help with this. Guest
The phono input on your receiver is a preamp, you don't need a separate one. It is normal for the phono input to be lower, as someone said, you're over thinking things. Just turn it up louder when listening to records and enjoy. Thanks for all the help with this. You have it set up correctly already as long as you are plugged into the phono input on your Marantz. As mentioned above, the receiver has a preamp built in.Enjoy the music, dont worry about buying a preamp. Save up for a better TT if you enjoy it.
