hickey
Thought this was pretty good and raises an interesting question: http://www.ethanzuckerman.com/blog/2008/01/16/vinyl-ethics/
andrews
Somewhat interesting, but I don't think that situation has anything to do with 99% of the records collected by people using this board.
hickey
I disagree. It raises the question of ethics when digitizing an expensive and hard to find piece of vinyl and making it available to them online. Most people on this board are interested in and collect expensive and hard to find vinyl.
xxmartinxx
I think it does the bands a service to get that music out there that the labels have gone belly up years, that the tapes are long since gone, or that not enough people want a repress of to make it "worthy" to do so. dylan
i dont think it applies to the people on this board as much because we are here to collect the vinyl. if it was just a matter of us hearing the music of say "goddamnit" we could just as easily go down the street to best buy and buy the cd. but we would rather have the vinyl, not just the music. same with stuff that isnt available on cd, yeah we can download it, but i dont think having mp3s of the songs is going to stop anyone on this board from still buying that record

xxmartinxx
I'm curious how well USB tables work compared to just going from the stereo to the AUX IN on a sound card.
monk0nuggets
I have a USB table, but I haven't tried out the USB capabilities yet.
manicdogbert
i do this all the time. if there is something i like that is out of print and that i think warrants a listen (either CD or vinyl), i throw it up on my blog. most of it happens to be out of print vinyl and/of stuff that isn't readily available on CD. i don't feel any guilt doing it. just want to spread some good hard to find music. burntwolf
I'm curious how well USB tables work compared to just going from the stereo to the AUX IN on a sound card. using a USB box is way better than the MIC IN port on a sound card. i use one of these: http://www.xitel.com/USA/prod_inportdl.htm works great i'm not sure what USB turntables come with...if it's comparable or if there are better/worse ones and if you have tapes you could get one of these: http://www.retrothing.com/2007/08/ion-introduces-.html or http://www.firebox.com/product/1700

I'm not convinced it's any better through the box than the AUX IN, and the information on their website is next to none.
tre
http://www.amazon.com/Numark-TTUSB-Turntable-with-USB/dp/B000G3FNVM/ref=pd_ys_qtk_rvi?pf_rd_p=186412001&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_i=home&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1SEYQ2BFD2C64FJFNPMF Got this the other day. Stuck it on my mess of a desk at work. Plugged in the USB to my laptop, clicked a couple things in Audacity's settings (the program to rip the files) and it plays thru the speakers connected to my comp. (JBL Monsters) Love it. Now I sit and listen to records at my desk all day...

tre
...for the record, I haven't ripped anything, and not really planning on it, I just got it to listen to shit live, as it spins. I need to be more intentional with my listening. It's probably the best purchase I have made in a while...

manicdogbert
i have a MOTU 828 Firewire interface which i use for recording my band. but i also use it to transfer vinyl to my computer. just plug in the L/R auxs into 2 channels (using a aux to 1/4" adapter). then run the MOTU unit into Garageband. all my transfers sound really good. i don't need to re-eq anything. burntwolf
this is the article i was thinking of, but it doesn't mention line in vs. usb. that must have been in some other oink thread. http://www.scribd.com/doc/30547/Ripping-Vinyl-to-FLAC
