sgoodcore
I've never used bit torrent or the like before. How does it work? Do I need special programs? I assume so. Do they make those programs for Mac users?
AlexH.
It's super easy. Step 1: get a Bittorrent client. I use Transmission for Mac: http://www.transmissionbt.com/ Step 2: find a tracker. Let's say, legaltorrents. http://beta.legaltorrents.com/ Step 3: find a torrent you want and download the torrent file. Let's say this episode of MAKE TV: http://beta.legaltorrents.com/torrents/388-make-television-episode-110 Step 4: Some clients (like Transmission) will automatically check your downloads folder for .torrent files. Otherwise, just click it to open it in your client. Step 5: It downloads. Step 6: Seed, dammit. Upload at least as much as you download. That's the basics. Also, the more seeders a torrent has, the faster it will download. So if you find duplicate copies of a torrent, choose the one with more seeders, obviously, unless the top one isn't the level of quality you want. Example: FLAC torrents will have less seeders than MP3.
mclz
you also have to have an open port so it downloads faster, but that's a whole other process.

lonesomexloveus
soon after i started downloading this way, my computer crashed and my harddrive got destroyed. needless to say, even thought it was probably unrelated, when i got a new harddrive after that i never did it again. vitriol
If you use the right sites for torrents, you should be golden. I've never downloaded anything that was harmful to my computer, but I stick to only a few tried and true torrent sites (demonoid, mininova, pirate bay) and remain overly cautious. As for programs, I've always used azureus, which is called vuze now. You can check it out here.
voodooramen
µTorrent for the win. And yes, seed what you download it's the right thing to do. Personally with my crappy upload bandwith I set 10-15kb/s on each torrent I am uploading, and seed it as long as I feel like it. At least to match in a 1:1 ratio for the file size. vitriol
I got used to Vuze. Maybe I'm just lazy. I guess it doesn't really matter, as he was looking for a Mac program. You can always check oldversion.com for, uh, older versions of programs, including Azureus, if that's what you're into.

jercjast
I just never bothered to update my Azureus on my Mac and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I have the new version on my PC and it reminds of when Kazaa sold out back in the day.
adamlikesmusic
I use the uTorrent beta for Mac. It's way awesome. (Except the last update I downloaded was totally broken, and of course the uTorrent developers don't condone downgrading. Was hard as shit to find the install file of an older version, but found it eventually.)
