How do torrents work?

Recommended Posts

It's super easy.

Step 1: get a Bittorrent client. I use Transmission for Mac: http://www.transmissionbt.com/

Step 2: find a tracker. Let's say, legaltorrents. http://beta.legaltorrents.com/

Step 3: find a torrent you want and download the torrent file. Let's say this episode of MAKE TV: http://beta.legaltorrents.com/torrents/388-make-television-episode-110

Step 4: Some clients (like Transmission) will automatically check your downloads folder for .torrent files. Otherwise, just click it to open it in your client.

Step 5: It downloads.

Step 6: Seed, dammit. Upload at least as much as you download.

That's the basics.

Also, the more seeders a torrent has, the faster it will download. So if you find duplicate copies of a torrent, choose the one with more seeders, obviously, unless the top one isn't the level of quality you want. Example: FLAC torrents will have less seeders than MP3.

If you use the right sites for torrents, you should be golden. I've never downloaded anything that was harmful to my computer, but I stick to only a few tried and true torrent sites (demonoid, mininova, pirate bay) and remain overly cautious.

As for programs, I've always used azureus, which is called vuze now. You can check it out here.
