mcm1610
So while a truly good actor should have a wide range of roles under his belt, a la Tom Hanks etc., some actors make movie after movie where they never change. I think the big few that come to my mind are: Vince Vaughn - While I do enjoy some of his movies, it's just Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers or Swingers or whatever. Same fast-talking shtick in every role. Michael Cera - the uncomfortable teen. He's always a dorky, awkward kid in everything from AD to Superbad to(at least it appears so) Year One. Chris Farley - I loved him, but he really is just a fat, obnoxious goof in every movie he ever showed up in. Who else can be added to this list? (edited to fix the goof-up of switching Accepted for Superbad.)
travis
Ben Stiller I love all the actors you mentioned and Ben Stiller as well. They are very 1-dimensional but I enjoy most of their movies, even if it is just to be entertained once and never watch again.
mcm1610
Yea, it's perfectly acceptable to love that character that the person always plays, but after so many identical roles, you start to catch on that they don't have any range. dante3000
The man who defined the genre Will Farell. It's too bad because "Stranger Than Fiction" was amazing but he never seems to do that role anymore. Also, I think Jim Carry gets a pass as he's done some remarkable work with "man on the moon" "Truman Show" "Eternal Sunshine" and even interesting stuff like "27" (was that it? I don't remember). But yes, most of his comedy has become similar.
mcm1610
Yea, Jim Carry was brought up as the "comedians who broke the 1-D mold". Eternal Sunshine and Truman show are fantastic. Haven't seen a whole lot else of his more serious roles.
