halfasspunkshow
Looks like i came up with a hard list for people to choose. Because i know i had a hard time. But i thought it would be fun to see what people would come up with. So far i am amazed. Its all over the board. Id say this is a great thread. oakland
Uhhh...I have to break it down into two categories...and this is still soooo not my "best" top 5 breakdown."Rock" 1. The Clash 2. Minor Threat 3. Soft Machine 4. Ramones 5. Operation Ivy "Jazz" 1. Miles Davis' bands (50s through the 70s) 2. John Coltrane Quartet 3. Herbie Hancock's bands (same era as Miles) 4. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers 5. Medeski, Martin, and Wood What did you do, Google "top five punk bands" and "top five jazz groups"? I am guessing it is, as Soft Machine is not "punk" (unless you consider early psych-jazzy rock punk...I kinda do ). I did put like ten minutes or so of thought into those lists... ??? steventangent
I'm gonna just shoot from the hip here and question myself later. Bands that have influenced my writing : Black Sabbath Pixies Iggy Pop's first 6 studio albums (the 3 Stooges records/Kill City/The Idiot/Lust For Life Far The Cure and what the hell, At the Drive In, too. I cheat at shit.
kurtz
1. The Clash 2. Fugazi Those are the only two I don't have to think about. The other three would likely change frequently.
controlthebleeding
While there are a bunch of bands i admire alot, these bands were my fav's because in hindsight every album they did never really let me down. Not to mention 3 out of the 5 bands had exceptional Lyricists. 4 out of the 5 being exceptional songwriters. 1. Boston 2. Elvis Costello & The Attractions 3. Jawbreaker 4. The Pogues 5. WhiskeytownThe Replacements

bill
I can do top 3, 1. Dinosaur Jr 2. Superchunk 3. Kiss After that it's too difficult, I really like Ben Deily era Lemonheads for example but don't particularly care for the later stuff. I also love most Teenage Fanclub but their last albums I don't really like too much so i don't think they can go in the top 5.

I also love most Teenage Fanclub but their last albums I don't really like too much so i don't think they can go in the top 5. i had a similar problem with Saves The Day. I love the early stuff, and some of the more recent stuff is OK, but after In Reverie they just fell off. I would have loved to include them in my top 5 but i just couldn't because of this. Just Another Tom
This is a tough list to make, and i'm not sure i want to commit to it... the first three are easy, i am going to reserve the other two for the future! 1. The Lawrence Arms 2. Whitesnake 3. At The Drive-in
