Oh, and are you traveling solo, or with someone? If you have a partner, or if you don't mind paying a bit over hostel prices to actually have your own room, take a look at the Mosser Hotel in SF. They have shared bath rooms for $315 a week + tax. They're very small rooms, but they're nicely outfitted (wifi, newly remodeled, etc) and right in the middle of downtown, a block from the Powell St. BART station. I stayed there for a week last spring, and loved it.

my other partner will be my backpack, hehe.

do you know how much the hostel would be per night for 1 person? i found a hostel that charges 28$ a night: http://www.usahostels.com/sanfrancisco/index.html?lang=10&h=1

it looks pretty cool. also, my friend told me that in the u.s, you can negotiate with a lot of hostels & hotels and they can actually put down the price.

You can check the days you're looking for at themosser.com, but I think it's usually around $70 a night. The week rate is a significant discount because it's actually a hotel, but priced way cheaper than the other hotels in the area. That hostel looks pretty nice, though. And I think you'll be hard pressed to beat $28 a night.

Chinatown/little italy (right next to eachother)

you might as well go see downtown/ union square (and I think thats near the record stores) the castro is quite interesting, and a few blocks up from that you can climb up this pretty big hill then on top of a big rock and see the whole city. Its called Corona Heights

If you're into baseball at all taking a walk down by the water near ATT park is super nice.

edit: and Golden Gate park/ haight ashbury

its far, but i think you can get from the airport to downtown on bart. Also the walk from dt to the golden gate would be really long I think

You can take the BART train from the airport to downtown. Takes ~45 minutes, and is ~$5 each way, iirc.

If you haven't already, check out http://www.sfmta.com/ for all things mass transit in SF. It's not the best laid out site, but the maps and route lists should be very helpful. The 28 bus runs from downtown out to the Golden Gate Bridge. There's also Golden Gate Park which is a different place altogether with walking trails and a couple nice museums.

Keep in mind that, other than getting b/t the city and SFO, you'll probably only take BART if you're leaving the city (Oakland, Berkeley, etc). http://www.bart.gov/stations/index.aspx

In the city, you'll take buses and the Muni Metro (http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mmaps/metromaps.htm) which shares some stations with BART. Muni offers multi-day passports that you can use on all the buses and trains (Not BART, though). Buy it in the baggage claim at SFO: http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/passports.htm

According to the last link, you can only by them here:

* SFMTA Customer Service Center, 11 South Van Ness Avenue at Market

* Muni Ticket Sales Location at Market and Powell Streets

* Muni Ticket Sales Location at Hyde and Beach Streets (near Ghirardelli Square)

* Passports are also sold every day at the information booths in the baggage claim areas at the San Francisco International Airport. Hours vary by location and are subject to change. As of Dec. 16, 2009, sales hours are as follows:

o Terminal 1: 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

o Terminal 3: 8:45 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

o International Terminal "A" side: 1:45 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

o International Terminal "G" side: 8:45 a.m. to 10:30 p.m

I'd recommend grabbing one before you leave the airport. The info booths are in baggage claim and are really easy to find.

  • 2 weeks later...

^^yeah, i talked about my trip with my grand pa last night and he said it would be better to go to SF in summer time because at this time of the year, i'm just going to freeze my ass off and won't enjoy it as much. and yeah, i was suppose to leave today, but i had some personnal problems to take care of before leaving (good thing i didn't bought the plane ticket yet)

i was thinking about going to san diego instead, for 2 weeks. is it worth it? keep in mind that i will still be backpacking.

SF rules, and don't be afraid to take BART into the east bay, much better record stores over here. Take BART to the MacArthur station (which is Oakland) and then walk up 40th street about three or four blocks to 1234 Go! records, it's a great store. Feel free to PM/IM if you have questions/get lost/whatever!
