ps, if i go to this, will you go with a bag of popcorn to watch all the fun that could happen with me taunting him between every single song? cus if you do, i'm coming to chi town!

Wayne, that's almost worth the cost of paying for your flight.

ben doesn't seem like a good heckler though so i seriously doubt he'd heckle back. there are few frontman that can hold their own. he doesn't seem like one of them. not saying it's bad because most frontman can't be as witty.

i think doug stanhope needs to front a band. now that guy can heckle back and leave you feeling stupid for trying afterwards.

classic!

i hear he's not into it at all. and knowing how that douche works he's probably get all his "til death" crowd to try and scare me..but let's be honest here....i've almost died 3 times...i'm not to scared of anything really!.

so am i getting this plane ticket or what? ;)

$72?

Haha...I could give it a shot...

"Hey, your Gm7 chord was acutally a G7 chord...ya jerk!"

It's a good line-up but I'm not going.

I'm with Justin. I know enough of the stories about how horrible Ben Weasel is that I just refuse to give the man any of my money.

Not to mention Ben Weasel himself has personally once got a good friend of mine suspended from his job just because of things my friend had said on the internet.

Ha! You know what I mean, though. You pay $20, see a bunch of great bands and have a good time. You get you money's worth. Nothing else should really matter. Not going/paying because you don't like the music is fine, but saying they'll be fun shows and not going because of scene politics is just dumb.

Unless Ben Weasel did something to you personally, Justin. Then I would understand.

nothing to me personally, but how he's treated my friends, other labels he's worked with, and his general attitude.

Listen Andrew,

you've spent a lot of your life listening to SW albums and the music has permeated your life. You're invested in SW; in time, and yes it could be argued money, but way more importantly: in time. ...and I am not.

I got into the Ramones and the Ramones-disciple punk bands later than most people because I simply took a different musical path as a teenager. And by the time I got around to start checking the SW stuff out I was surrounded by a lot of people that had dealt with Ben and still do deal with him on personal and business levels and so my opinion on the guy is 100% tainted by other people's opinions and then my own experiences in understanding how he operates. I completely recognize that Ben is at times a world class lyricist first and can write a catchy pop punk song better than just about anybody, those facts are facts and indisputable. I'm not super into the Riverdales though (though I do like the song "Make Way", the Methadones played that live a few times and I didn't know until much later).

My objection to dealing with him are purely based on on my opinion of the man and the knowledge in my head of the shit he pulls that people don't know about. That knowledge that I simply will not go into on a message board because if nothing else that would spin into a hearsay argument first and an argument on opinion second. And that is not an argument I have time for, for one; and two: one I care to participate in, because it's pointless.

My opinion isn't based on a Shakespearean betrayal on a personal level, it's about the general consensus about the man and not the band. I really wish I could really get into that band, but I don't have the nostalgia to back it up. I bought Boogadax3 like 14 or 15 years ago because it had a iconic cover and I knew nothing about the band except they were this mysterious band from Chicago that I'd heard about and while I thought "Dingbat" was a super catchy song, but I thought the lyrics to that song were dumb and the songs sounded too much the same (and there were too many songs on that record) so I decided I wasn't into that style so I sold the CD back to the store and got something else. In the past few years I've had several friends continue to try to get me to like more o f their stuff. I've had friends get deep and philosophical about Anthem for a New Tomorrow and the Emo album and his solo albums, etc..., but I just don't care enough to overcome what I know about the person behind most of it...well, I'll say the voice behind it to not discredit other past or current members of the band.

This topic comes up a couple of times a year, and we continually get into the same argument, you see bands differently than I do, this isn't scene drama that you think I'm making a fuss over. I choose to not support that man and what he does, and put my money where my mouth is.

But let's get serious here for a second, there is pizza in Chicago that will make you forget about SW, even if it's just for a few moments.

This is the longest, most vague answer ever given.

Honestly, I don't know why anyone would have anything against Ben Weasel. You're acting like he's some guy who is a habitual label jumper, but the guy had his the majority of releases on one label (Lookout) for more than a decade, up until the label was no longer truly functional. I'm guessing the label you're referring to is Asian Man. I have no idea what went down, and I doubt you do, either.

A friend of mine saw the Riverdales when they were opening for Green Day in the mid 90's. They were met with boos and shit being thrown at them from a very young audience. One of the things thrown at them was a watch, which Ben caught. He looked at it, said, "Hmmm... It looks like it's past your bedtimes", smashed it to the ground, then busted into another song. That's probably the wittiest thing ever.

i think that was the whole point of the post. to be vague.

as far as why anyone would hate him? hmm. this is the easiest way to describe it.

i get invited to stay at your house after a show i played. Mainly because you are being a cool guy and all. as soon as i get there i see a pic of your family. i start sneering and just plain laughing at the clothes they wear. you then show me the room I'll be sleeping in. I then start fumbling through your records only to laugh at the music you like. I then go into the kitchen and start whining about the food you have and how there's nothing to eat in this stupid house and by the way, that's a retarded looking lampshade and ceiling fan. Its hideous. Damn, you're taste in music sucks too. I'm sure you'd let me stay and come back anytime i pleased.

that's pretty much the attitude the dude has. and this isn't recent. this spans 20+ years. hence why some don't like him. just sayin'

who throws a perfectly good watch on stage? sounds almost made up. then again people throw perfectly good beer on stage too. So who knows.
