Jane vomited and started choking. Walt let her die so that Jesse would get out of his heroin addiction. At least I'm sure that's how he justified it to himself. I think that for this show to take it to the next level and lead into the final season in full dramatic fashion, that a main character has to die in the finale or at least be left with that impression.
