danthemjfan23
Nirvana - In Utero (original Steve Albini mixes) From Wikipedia: "In Utero is the third and final studio album by the American grunge band Nirvana, released September 21, 1993 on DGC Records. Nirvana intended the record to diverge significantly from the polished production of its previous album, Nevermind (1991). To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, the group hired producer Steve Albini to record In Utero during a two-week period in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio. The music was recorded quickly with few studio embellishments, and the song lyrics and album packaging incorporated medical imagery that conveyed frontman Kurt Cobain's outlook on his publicized personal life and his band's newfound fame. Soon after recording was completed, rumors circulated in the press that DGC might not release the album in its original state, as the record label felt that the result was not commercially viable. Although Nirvana publicly denied the statements, the group was not fully satisfied with the sound Albini had captured. Albini declined to alter the album further, and ultimately the band hired Scott Litt to make minor changes to the album's sound and remix the singles "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies"." here's how steve albini wanted us to hear this album... http://www.sendspace.com/file/3l30x9

danthemjfan23
no problem, scott. most of the songs sound exactly the same, just quieter. but some songs you can really tell a difference very easily and it's interesting to hear another version than the one you're used to. it was a very interesting listen. danthemjfan23
yeah dude put 'em up! i'm in a serious nirvana mood the past couple days after watching a documentary on kurt cobain's "suicide". it was like an hour and a half long and really interesting. done by a british dude who talked to a bunch of people who knew kurt way back when (his old girlfriend of 3 years, his grandfather, his old librarian, etc.). mattstrike
I love the solo on Albini's version of Heart-Shaped Box. The band, more specifically, Krist and Dave, wanted Litt to remix because Krist was convinced that Albini's mixes were off-putting. There was some talk or speculation (can't remember which) that Cobain and Albini were in agreement to make the album as harsh and disconcerting to listen to as possible. (Probably paraphrasing Krist's thoughts on the matter). I think it's hilarious that the reason Albini's version got pressed back in 2002 was due to someone literally grabbing the wrong master off the shelf. Vivendi Universal sure has some tight quality control!
