silentgods
is a giant pain in the ass. does anybody know of any reliable websites to use?
cactusbot
Besides Craigslist? I think it varies greatly from city to city. I think each city has specific websites for listings.
kriss
Craigslist is always hit or miss, but I've found a couple of beyond great apartments on there - it just takes the footwork obviously. Apartment Finders and similar companies are a complete waste of time.
towniecore
city-data.com has some pretty helpful stuff. Just search the city and apartments.

imaxcowboyx
www.padmapper.com is a pretty cool way to look for apts. It pulls information from craigslist and local rental sites, and lets you peruse them on google maps. It also offers "avg rent vs the apt in question" as well as some other cool bits of information on apartments (walk score, local transit, etc). Highly recommended
somethingvinyl
It's funny, but I've found all my most recent jobs within the past five years and found a few good places to live on Craig's List. Apartment Finder is a good resource. It's tougher if you're not in the city you're looking to move to. Moving from a 2 bedroom house to a three bedroom apartment this weekend. An extra bedroom + 100 more square feet of living space and paying $50 less a month.
