Moving Suggestions

Recommended Posts

There is a high chance that within the next month I am moving 15 hours away from where I live.

I currently own a three bedroom house now, so that gives you an idea of how much stuff I have.

It's not just a dorm room or one bedroom apartment.

Besides my parents house, I have lived in one apartment, and then this house for the past 5 years. So I don't have experience moving.

So my question to those who have moved before, what's the cheapest/most efficient way to transfer all your stuff to your new location?

Uhaul? Portable Storage Unit like a POD or Packrat? Other things?

When we moved 15 hours away from Ohio, we hired a moving company (mostly because my new job reimbursed us for it). Two guys picked up all our stuff, loaded it into a semi, and dropped it off 1000 miles away, a couple days later. Ended up being around $3 grand, but that's all based on how much stuff you have (weight and volume), so I'm sure all those records won't be cheap.

Keep in mind that if you rent a U-Haul, you can get all your buds to help you load it up, and they're not too bad to drive, but if you don't know anybody where you're going, you gotta unload it by yourself. Or pay some day laborers.

There's no bones about it; moving sucks and is pretty expensive. I grew up in a military family and moved every 2-3 years to CONUS and OCONUS places, however it was always paid for by the Navy. If you can fit your stuff in a Penske/Uhaul that's the cheapest route. I looked at doing a pod when I moved from CO to FL and it was ridiculous expensive. The key is having people help you load it and one dude who's really good at Tetris that can fit all of your crap in the truck efficiently.

Ask someone in a band that has to fit all their stuff into one vehicle. (I'm good at tetris because of this.)
