tl;dr but what i do is use an AppleScript (i think its from dougscripts but just google it) that updates the itunes play count and then if you have last.fm running it will scrobble it automatically at some point downstream (and it keeps track of play counts, which is something i like, as a complete nerd - not just a record nerd)

I don't get the impression that many people here use RYM, but I use a script called scRYMble from time to time since my entire collection is already cataloged there. It basically uses the track list from a RYM release page as a guide to either scrobble a past play or scrobble the release in real time. You don't have to be a member to use it.

this sounds interesting, and as a fellow nerd, also right up my alley. how do you log entries? is there some sort of GUI or is it all done via prompts in OS X terminal or something?

I believe you may be referring to the iTunes Universal Scrobbler script, as mentioned earlier in the thread.
