AdventureIsOutThere
Is it worth it to spend the extra $100? I'm planning on upgrading from my Sony table and I am having somewhat of a small difficulty choosing... Any help would be much appreciated! ajxd
They upgraded the Debut for a reason. Get the carbon.
robotfactory
Yes, definitely. The tonearm alone is worth it, not to mention they give you an Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge, which alone costs an additional $100 (and it is a pretty damn nice cartridge for the price). They also upgraded the motor mounting (which is awesome since the motor mounting sucked on the debut). If I didn't already own a debut iii I would be all over a carbon. sjb2k1
you and i are in the same boat, OP. well, if i had any money we would be. have my heart set on the carbon when my finances recover.
hipsterasfolk
I was in the same boat, was going to get a carbon but ended up with a Debut III for $245 which gives me $155 of "free upgrades" but the $70 difference is just better for the Carbon. $100 cart and an awesome tonearm = worth it! AdventureIsOutThere
Yeah I you and i are in the same boat, OP. well, if i had any money we would be. have my heart set on the carbon when my finances recover. Yeah, I am planning on getting the Carbon myself. I was recently rear ended while driving, but the damage is extremely minimal. With a total estimate coming out to more than I imagined, I believe that I am going to skip the repair and put some money into my pocket with some of that going into a Carbon because the cartridge on my "non replaceable cartridge turntable" just died and I'm in desperate need of a new TT. kadaver
After giving it a long thought i made the decision to buy the Pro-Ject Debut III but wanted to see the turntable in person, i wanted to upgrade with an acrylic platter and 2M cardridge, the shop owner showed me the Pro-Ject Debut III Carbon Esprit which was exacly how i wanted it to be, costed me 399 euro. I am super happy with this Carbon Esprit version it sounds awesome!
kannibal
Nice! Congrats.
Thomas_Nassiff
I was going to suggest the Carbon Espirit - been researching these the past couple of days. Nice choice.
tankerdesk
Are there any other differences between the Carbon and Carbon Espirit besides the acrylic platter and 2M cartridge (which you can get for the reg carbon)?
cymbalism15
If you get the carbon get the one with the built in preamp because the preamp being built in is supposedly the 150$ pro-ject preamp which comes highly recommended by all of my friends and it's only 100 added in so you save 50$ and its convenient. If I'm wrong someone can feel free to correct me, I didn't read anything official this is just what I've heard. Basically: Save your money and get a carbon with the built in preamp. You won't regret it.
ajxd
I disagree. It's not the same quality. I think you would regret it.
dethrock
I just called a local store to see if he has any Carbon's. He doesn't have any right now but he said for $50 more you can get the RPM 1.3 Genie. I'll have to look into it because I'm thinking of upgrading in the next few months. ajxd
The 1.3 is very nice. I love mine. Completely separated motor is awesome. I upgraded to a 2M Blue cart though.
hugs
If anyone is looking for a debut III, I have one for sale in the For Sale forum...comes with a bunch of upgrades. Its only about 6 months old.
romanos27
The 1.3 is very nice. I love mine. Completely separated motor is awesome. I upgraded to a 2M Blue cart though. I've also got the Genie and love it. The separated motor is a great design, plus it just looks cool.
Emo Revival
So I've been looking at the Carbon, but it seems everywhere I want to buy it from is sold out :/ also does anyone know if you need a speed box with the carbon? I'm assuming you do like the rest of the pro-ject lines, but I haven't found one that says its compatible.
kannibal
The carbon is compatible with the speed box, but it doesn't "need" it. A manual change can always be made.
AdventureIsOutThere
The carbon is compatible with the speed box, but it doesn't "need" it. A manual change can always be made. This is correct. I enjoy changing it manually. Just to clarify, it involves removing the platter and placing the band in a different position.
ajxd
I love how everyone assumes they have to purchase a speed box when it comes to the Debut III. AdventureIsOutThere
tankerdesk
Yeah I was wondering about that too. Changing speeds isn't that hard at all. And I haven't noticed any speed problems that it would help regulate/fix.
bobfrombob
I asked this question in another thread but if it gets answered anywhere it will probably be here.... Anybody use the Q Up with a Project Debut Carbon? It looks like a pretty reasonable "non-automatic" fix, but the website shows some crazy hack you have to do to make it work with the Project. thanks

Plus some stores still have the regular debut they are trying to offload.
