Framing Prints

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

I have a few screened prints I'd like to frame and get up on my wall but I'm having a tough time finding frames from some of them. I have a few that are 25''L & 19''W and 22''L & 14''W mainly screen prints from shows and free prints that come with pre-orders. Is there anywhere that you order from or even go to to find frames from these. Yes, I've "Googled it" and found a few places but I want some opinions on where to go.

I use this eBay store for most frames, unless it's like 18x24 and then I'll just get it from target. If it's a size print that you can't find a matching frame for, go to a craft store like michael's or something and get a custom matte frame. Can get expensive, but worth it for nice prints.

since they're awkward sizes, probably the cheapest way to do it is to go to hobby lobby and buy the sectional frame pieces--they're just standard black metal. they come in sets of two, so you'd just buy 2 sets to match the dimensions that you need. they put them on sale for 50% off every other week (basically when the custom framing orders aren't discounted). then you would need to buy backing which is only a few bucks and glass. they offer UV protection or standard glass and it can get pretty pricey depending on size. i've actually heard that it's cheaper if you just buy the frame at HL and the glass at a hardware store like lowe's or home depot, but i've never done that personally. your other option would be to buy a standard sized frame that's slightly larger and a matte (these also get put on sale for 50% off frequently). or most expensive would be to get custom framing done by the specialist there--you'd pick out the frame, matte, etc. you're looking at easily over $100 that way though.

ac moore is a good craft store around here, im just not sure how wide it is.

but as a savings card holder there, i pretty much always have the ability to get half off custom framing. its expensive at first, but from what i can tell, it pretty much just comes down to the price of a frame by then.

be careful with this place as i ordered a couple frames from their Amazon store and received cheap plastic and not glass. assumed the frames would come with glass since 99% of frames do and it was not mentioned anywhere in the product description that it would be plastic. they are good for odd sizes though and are cheaper than going the custom framing route. the wood they use is decent, but you get what you pay for as it's not spectacular in terms of quality. it just depends on if you want a glass frame or not.

If you care at all about these prints.....get them custom framed.....spend the money and get conservation matting, backing, and glass.....don't force it into a standard sized frame where the matting is uneven and looks like shit. Michael's kind of sucks....but they seems to be widely available for most people.....properly framing a piece of art is an investmant and should also protect the artwork. I've made this rant on this board several times over the years and I'm sure nobody cares or has followed my advise....the amount of unsalvagable artwork I've seen destroyed by poor framing over the years is so damned frustrating.....spend the money to have it done correctly by a proffessional.

Completely agree with this, all my prints bar one or two standard sized (and cheaper) ones are in custom frames, they look shit hot and they're protected. Unless it's a bigger piece, for which this may not be possible, you can order a custom frame online with UV glass/plastic, good quality frame and mat, just make sure you get acid free tape to secure the print in there. This way works out a bit cheaper but i'd say spend a bit more than you want to getting it done in any case.
