SaviorSelf
So i recently picked up my first table at an estate sale. Its a Sansui FR-D35. Only thing wrong with it was it needed a new needle (or so he told me). Can anyone recommend a cartridge I can buy to put on this thing to squeeze a little bit of a better sound out of it? Or could I buy a Shure or AT cartridge?
xadamhudsonx
That's just a replacement stock cartridge. You might have to do a little bit more research on the other cartridges you're considering to see if they're compatible with your TT. SaviorSelf
Ok, thanks for the advice bud
ajxd
That guy above doesn't really know what he's talking about. What he linked isn't even a cartridge, its a stylus. What you need to do is tell us what cartridge is currently on your table. Hell even if you can't figure it out, a picture helps. From there we can tell you what and how to replace it (either the stylus aka needle, or the entire cartridge).

I know its not an "audiophile" TT or anything special but I would still like to get the best sound i possibly can out of it
ajxd
Nagh he has the right idea, but he doesn't know your exact table's history. It could have any cartridge on it. He gave you a stylus replacement for the cartridge that came stock on it... but the stock cartridge may not be on it.
SaviorSelf
I think it might be the stock cartridge as it says Sansui, but I could be wrong. I am new to this so bare with me and Im sure there are previous threads that could answer my questions, but what is more important, the cartidge and stylus, or the TT itself? And is there a sort of "breaking point" where the cartridge wont make any more of a difference unless I got a more expensive TT?
ajxd
Well yeh, I wouldn't recommend putting a $400 cartridge on that table by any means... But a good rule of thumb in audio is that your setup will only be as good as its weakest link. What's your budget?
SaviorSelf
Im probably looking to spend $1000 tops ( if buying new ) on a setup. Im from long island and theres no shortage of used equipment on craigslist so thats also a possibility. All I have right now is the TT, so I am starting from scratch. What would you recommend? SaviorSelf
Okay so it looks like it is fitted with an Audio Technica cartridge. I don't know how to post pics from my phone. I could email them to you if necessary though
swemoll
Sell the table, spend the $1000 on a real turntable + an integrated and speakers.
SaviorSelf
Okay maybe the thread got derailed. I will purchase a better TT down the road. What kind of decent cartridge/stylus could I put on this fake TT?
ajxd
Its not a fake TT, its just old. Audio Technica made 100 differet types of carts. Figure out how to post pics, then do so. As for the rest of your system... what else do you currently have?
SaviorSelf
Just have the tt right now. Grabbed it for ten bucks so am just trying to listen to records. Ill eventually get a better one down the road but am looking to invest into a decent sound system first.
