Vintage turntables to look for?

Recommended Posts

I'd really love to go vintage for a table, but I really don't know what to be looking for. What brands seem to stand the test of time and have models that are still holding up well for a current sub-$200 budget?

Or specifically, is there anything from here that jumps out at any of you guys as quality choices at the moment?

I'm not even looking for a vintage table, but enough of these threads have popped up that I practically typed Marantz 6000 series in here myself.

Which I don't really understand. I don't have a Marantz turntable, but I thought the general consensus on Marantz tables was that they're really not that special, or good for that matter. They LOOK awesome though!

Good vintage turntable brands:

Pioneer

Thorens

Dual

Technics

That's sorta been the consensus I've found other places too. Any idea if these specific models are good choices, granted of course they're in decent shape and for the price?

I'd say the Technics one is the better one. I had a Technics SL-D2 (difference with the D1 is that it has an auto-return function). Real good starting table in my opinion. If it's in good condition it will do the job more than fine! After some years I upgraded to a Technics SL1200 mk2. I got that D2 for $80, so $125 seems to be a bit pricey...

I'm not sure why people keep pushing Marantz. Despite popular, but misinformed, belief---Marantz didn't make a great turntable. Receivers---yes. Turntables---no. Are their turntables shit---not exactly. But better can be had for the same price.

I have a Thorens 165 and a Technics 1200. I use the Technics because I need something that's not that sensitive. The Thorens picks up every step in a NYC apartment. Which sounds better? The Thorens but it would take an elephant to disrupt the 1200.
