Just received Figure 8 in the mail and put it on and WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS RECORD? Check online and Plain plates. ugh. Such a bummer. It sounds like garbage. XO sounds ok, but Figure 8 is a shit show.

Believe me, as a librarian and person who used to release records, I handle records like babies. Honestly, most of the records I inherited from my parents are in better shape than most of the new records I've bought recently. It makes no sense.

In my experience, there isn't a single place I can pin point. I get things from local shops, when traveling, and online, all of which I've continuously had this happen. It's kind of disheartening. Last week I bought 4 records, 2 had severe scuffing/scratching, 1 had light scuffing, 1 had some kind of chemical marking on one side making it almost unlistenable due to noise.

Am I alone in finding that 90% of the new records I buy these days are already scratched (or worse) upon opening them for the first time? What's the deal? In the past couple weeks I've opened some that were really bad. Anyone else having this experience?

Ended up checking out Smash, Som and Songbird. Randomly found a new copy of Andrew Bird's Mysterious Production of Eggs at Som - Anyone know if there has been a repress since its original 2005 release? I can't seem to find any info on one, other than a listening for it on his official site. Weird.

So, is there an actual completed list buried in this thread someplace? I ask, as I'm heading to DC tonight and would like to scope out a solid shop one evening this week. Edit: Found the map. Of the DC shops, does anyone have a preference?

After selling my old Marantz 2252B (which I was using mainly as a phono preamp at this point) and filing my taxes, I decided to upgrade a few components. Went ahead and bought a Gram Slee Special Edition 2 phono preamp, new Audioquest Golden Gate Interconnects, and an Audio-Technica AT150Sa cartridge (formally Ortofon 2M Red). Current complete line: Audio-Technica AT150Sa -> Thorens TD 295 mark 3 -> Gram Slee Special Edition 2 -> Audioquest Golden Gate Interconnects -> Marantz SR5005 -> 2 Axiom M60 v2

I've successfully stayed away, not so much out of want, but out of necessity. Things that are new with me since last visiting a few years back: - I got married - I started an ongoing film series here in Buffalo called Cultivate Cinema Circle - I am managing a makerspace and recording studio that are both free and open to the public at the Buffalo downtown library - I am writing quite a lot of film criticism for a number of outlets and festivals - I moved to a smaller, nicer apartment - Thanks to my incoming tax return, I am doing some minor upgrades to my audio setup

So happy to see ronnie's blue face still in the fold!

It's been a while. A lot has changed, but those LPs keep spinning.
