  1. I was doing a little adulting last night looking through the particulars of my renters insurance.  Unfortunately, I found that coverage for “collections” (ie my records) is limited to $250 and coverage for electronics such as TVs, receivers, etc is limited to $2500.   So...it’s fairly useless when it comes to my music hobby.

Can anybody recommend coverage that would actually cover the stuff I own?

  2. Likely a combination of the counter weight being set too light and a wobbly shelf/surface.

you need to buy/borrow a gauge to fix the first issue or just blindly crank it up since it’s a Crosley and will shred your records anyway.

the second issue is easiest to fix by putting the turntable on a wall mounted shelf.  That’s not always an option if you’re a renter or whatver.

  3. Farm bitcoin.  Another thing I should have done instead of going to college.

I once calculated how much money I would have if I simply took the (modest) amount of money I spent on college tuition and bought Apple stock instead, and the results were disheartening.

I’m pretty old though.  Apple stock bottomed out (~$5 per share?) and Bitcoin came out while I was in college.

If you are at the point where you don't even know what you need it would be insane to spend that kind of money

I don't think so.  He said he's not new to audio.  As long has he has the budget there's no reason to go through the entry-level motions just to step up to mid-range gear 6 months later.  $4-$6k isn't a massive sum of money when it comes to this stuff.

  5. Not a vinyl related purchase, but I recently picked up an Apple TV 4k to go with the Samsung 4k HDR set I bought last fall.

At time of purchase, I didn't even know that Apple was giving out freebee 4k versions of any movie you currently have in your library (most of mine were just from free digital download codes) so that was a really nice bonus.

Over the weekend I watched Deadpool, The Martian, and Stranger Things Season 2 in 4k HDR and have to admit that it REALLY takes some getting used to.  Instead of watching a movie, it's just like watching people walking around. EDIT:  I actually fixed this by turning off Auto Motion.  Either this wasn't kicking in regular HD content or it wasn't as noticeable.

  6. The new version on the Magni is out so you can get the Schiit Magni 2 Uber for $79 (normally $149) or the standard version for $59 (normally $99).

The Uber has the super handy (preamp?) outputs to chain your headphone amp with some desktop speakers etc.
