  1. Nice score! Is that the Overcast EP with "God's Bathroom Floor" on it, or the LP?
  2. Ahh, I just ordered too. Hopefully this works out for us all.
  3. Yeah, of all the stores in my area that I've checked (4 of 6 stores here stock vinyl), none of them are in the typical Music section. They are in the Electronics department, next to the shelf with the Crosley turntables, usually near the television and stereo displays. There's usually only a handful of records displayed on a cardboard box stand (typically about 6 to 12 records total).
  4. Not sure if this has been mentioned in this thread yet, but it looks like most of the Target stores have their vinyl on clearance. Of the 3 in my area that carry vinyl, they were all on clearance. 2 stores had them on 30% clearance, and one had it on 50% clearance. If you find one that has 50% off clearance, the Beatles releases will be about $10. I got the Pink Floyd releases (DSOTM and WYWH) for $14.48 each yesterday. Generally, I've seen the two Pink Floyd albums, U2's Joshua Tree, Steve Miller Band, and a few Beatles 2009 remasters (Revolver, St. Pepper, Let It Be), at Target stores. Not much of a selection, but this may be the cheapest you see brand new sealed copies of these titles.
  5. No one is forcing you to buy them. These are all albums that you can find in many other (cheaper) pressings. But those willing to pay a slight premium on well-mastered, analog-sourced copies of these albums on high-quality 180g vinyl will appreciate having the option. I, for one, am a big fan of MoFi releases, even though I only buy about 10% of the ones that get released. Seriously, $22-$30 for single LPs and $40 for 2LP's aren't THAT much of a premium over a standard release nowadays. From this batch, I'll probably only buy Pinkerton, and a couple of the Miles Davis ones shipping right now (In a Silent Way and Milestones).
  6. Shit! Didn't realize the Replacement Losers were different. I just traded in my sealed replacement last night to my local shop.
  7. All of the tracking numbers Dan posted on page 1 have been delivered. I'm on the west coast, and in the second shipment so I'm assuming mine will take a bit longer via media mail. I think Dan left his number in the first post, I'd give that a try.
  8. Oops, I missed this paragraph earlier for some reason. I'd say Rasputin in Berkeley is must visit for sure. The entire ground floor is all vinyl -- their selection is huge, and prices are very reasonable. You should set aside at least an hour if you wanna dig through it all. Amoeba Berkeley is one block away, and has a pretty decent vinyl selection too. I agree about the Rasputin at Union Square -- vinyl section keeps shrinking, and there aren't many good gets (mostly classic rock and soul records). If you're venturing out to the East Bay, here are some other ones: Mod Lang in El Cerrito (right next to Berkeley) -- awesome little shop that leans towards alt/indie rock (I'd say 3/4 of their vinyl selection is dedicated to that). Vinyl prices are very decent, as new vinyl tends to be on the lower end of the price spectrum. Stranded in Oakland -- I hate this shop, but they do have good in-stores and a good selection. This shop overprices the SHIT out of their records though. You'll be paying eBay / higher-end-Discog prices for everything here. Anything that is even remotely hard to find will be marked up to $40+ for a used record. From some people I've talked to, the owner gives people almost nothing for trade-ins and will pay $2 in trade credit for a record and flip it for $30 without blinking. 1-2-3-4 Go Records in Oakland -- I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but one of my favorites. Nice punk / metal section Needle to the Groove in Fremont -- I doubt you'll venture as far south in the East Bay as Fremont, but stop by here if you do. Awesome shop that gets a lot of hard to find stuff in all the time. The stock is always rotating so it's always a lot of fresh stock that hasn't been dug through much. This store leans towards hip-hop and classic rock, so maybe not your ideal place anyway. Groove Yard in Oakland -- It's strictly used vinyl with a big jazz selection. Some classic rock and soul as well, but used jazz is their wheelhouse. Usually the stuff is a tad more than I'd like to pay (typical jazz records are $8-$16, most often $12), but is worth a stop if you're a jazz head.
  9. Vinyl Solution in San Mateo is actually 5 minutes from my work, so it's the shop I go to the most. Tommy is good folks and all, but honestly his prices are generally $3 to $6 more than other record shops like Amoeba, Rasputin or Streetlight. The used selection is pretty good though, and the stuff he puts out on the floor are usually in good condition.
  10. Also, how could I forget 1-2-3-4 Go! Records in Oakland: http://1234gorecords.com/
  11. In SF, the biggest one is Amoeba. They have TONS of vinyl, and get lots of used stuff frequently. It's also on Haight Street, which is a cool little neighborhood to walk around and have lunch. There is a Rasputin's Records two blocks from Amoeba as well, but the vinyl section is like 1/20th the size of Amoeba's. There's also an Amoeba in Berkeley, but the SF one is much bigger. The one in Hollywood is the biggest of the three, though. Here's the site: http://www.amoeba.com/ Another small store in SF that I like is Aquarius Records in the Mission district. It's a small store that curates a small selection of new vinyl. Not a whole lot of selection, but all of the guys there are super knowledgeable about music and you can kill an hour just talking to them. It's also in a pretty cool neighborhood to visit with tons of good restaurants in the area: http://www.aquariusrecords.org/ If you're in downtown SF, check out the Rasputins out there next to Blondie's pizza. There's also Thrillhouse Records in the outer Mission that specializes in punk (http://www.thrillhouserecords.com/), and Rooky Ricardo's has tons of soul records (http://www.rookyricardos.com/) but can be priced a bit high. There are a few other small used shops that have the same classic rock records, but I'd hit up the bigger ones, as they have a bigger selection and you tend to find better deals.
  12. To assume that Kanye knows how alcohol and livers relate would be giving him too much credit. He only thinks with one organ -- the one he donates to Kim every night.
  13. I'm liking this album a lot too in general. The highlights are some of the best songs in his whole catalog (Black Skinhead, Bound 2, Blood on the Leaves), but a couple joints really drag it down (Guilt Trip especially). Production-wise this is about the most adventurous he's used, but lyrically he's taken a step back from MBDTF. He's always due for a corny line or two (and that sorta makes him endearing in a weird way), but he has especially cringe-worthy ones this time around (mi casa su casa/la costra nostra). Plus his delivery has gotten a bit less polished since MBDTF -- not as awkward as his first two albums, but man the way he hits the pocket on On Sight and I Am a God reminds me of P-Diddy. Nitpicky things aside though, Kanye comes with some compelling stuff once again. I wouldn't put this up there with MBDTF or College Dropout, but I'd probably slot it above Late Registration, Graduation and especially 808's.
  14. It's my front-runner as well. This seems to be the one album that I know will stick with me for years to come. I was making a playlist the other day and tried pulling the best songs on this album for it. I ended up with 80% of this album on there because I didn't know which songs to actually leave off.
  15. Anyone from the west coast receive theirs yet? I emailed them about mine, and they said the west coast ones are taking a bit longer than anticipated.
  16. Picked up a few things while visiting Denver: Surfer Blood - Astro Coast (reissue) Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion (180gr) Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan Deluxe (gave my other copy away) Dexter Gordon - Our Man in Paris (Music Matters 45RPM version) Cannonball Adderley (w/ Bill Evans) - Know What I Mean? (OJC reissue) The main reason I went to the store was to get the new Deafheaven in the first place, but they didn't get any in.
  17. Got the Beatles Stereo box set when it was on sale for $199. Lucked out and received the European pressed copies. Also got in a few out-of-print Music Matters albums: Hank Mobley - Soul Station Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch Grant Green - Matador Tina Brooks - True Blue Lee Morgan - Search for the New Land Andrew Hill - Point of Departure And then a few albums from the clearance bin: Elton John - Honky Chateau Holst's The Planets led by Eugene Ormandy Stan Getz / Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba Carole King - Tapestry Grant Green - Green Street Janis Joplin - Pearl Al Di Meola - Land of the Midnight Sun Keith Jarrett - Facing You
  18. Funny how the universe works. I was at Fry's Electronics today picking up some supplies for a project this weekend, when I stumbled upon a vinyl section! I never knew they carried vinyl. They ended up having 1 copy of the Broken Bells album, so I just swooped it up. They had a lot of classic rock, and hip-hop as well -- all for very good prices compared to the indie stores around my area. But thanks anyway for the offer. If you ever need me to pick anything up for you locally (I'm in the SF Bay Area), or any other favor, then all you gotta do is ask.
  19. Man, I'd be so grateful to take that off your hands...
  20. Seems like it's an unofficial release. I wonder if it's the same folks that did the Black Star 2LP that came in clear vinyl as well. I just saw the Black Star at my local store for $22 and couldn't resist picking up a copy. It actually sounds surprisingly good. Not the quietest pressing I have, but good overall nonetheless. It says "Limited Edition" on the cover on the lower right hand side, but the cover looks a bit bootleg in general. It didn't include liner notes. If it's the same people doing the De La Soul ones, I'd say buy with confidence. EDIT: with that said, isn't Rhino releasing a 2LP reissue later this month? I'd wait for that if the price is the same.
  21. FWIW, I have the Loser Edition and have spun it a half dozen times without issue. My pressing is very good.
  22. Yeah, Alligator, Boxer and Trouble Will Find Me are all like 1a, 1b and 1c. I go through different phases of preferring one over another but that all depends on mood, season, lunar phase, alignment of Jupiter's moons, etc. All of them are excellent. I quite like High Violet as well, but its a step below the other three (IMHO because I know it has lots of fans too) and the first two being a big step below that. EDIT: in response to allmightyseancore
  23. This album has been ruling my life for the past couple of weeks. It's definitely more stripped down than High Violet, but man do these songs get better and better with each listen. I'd rank this up there with Alligator/Boxer in their catalog, and it has potential to top all of them. Right now I'd rank them like this: 1. Boxer 2. Trouble Will Find Me 3. Alligator 4. High Violet 5. Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers 6. The National But seriously, this band has been on SUCH a roll since Alligator. Cannot wait for them to come through my area on their tour. It's a shame they will only be in town in a festival setting, so we don't get a full set. They are one of the best bands touring right now, as their live show is a completely different experience from their records.
  24. That really isn't THAT insane. Miles wasn't necessarily a fantastic trumpet player in the same vein as virtuosos like Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, etc. He was mostly praised for putting together some great bands, and being at the forefront of many musical shifts/movements in jazz from bebop to cool jazz to modal jazz to fusion. Although Miles isn't one of my top 5 trumpet players, from a soloist perspective, he led some of my absolute favorite albums ever: Kind of Blue, Miles Smiles, A Tribute to Jack Johnson, In A Silent Way, Miles Ahead, Milestones.
