  1. You gotta decide whether you want to spend the rest of your life worrying over every possible defect a record can incur from production to retail to the post man to your front door OR whether you want to enjoy collecting and save your mental energy for listening to the music (or some happy medium in between).

I tend to side with customers more often than not but I do think some people use record collecting as a therapeutic means of exerting control over a pretty uncontrollable reality.  It can feel soothing to obsess over meaningless stuff like that phantom pop that you might sorta hear if you put your ear up close to the speaker and play that same intro 24 times or that corner bend that is visible when you put it under that one table lamp in the hallway.  It can also make you feel like you are in control when you rant to customer support and on message boards about minor defects like seam splits or corner dings and how UNACCEPTABLE they are.

  2. I'm actually on board with raising prices to discourage flipping. If this were $15, you'd be looking at hundreds of copies immediately going to the second hand market. At $30, hopefully more fans and keepers will opt in and more flippers will sit this one out.

  3. OK here is my list, broken up into buckets.

STUFF I WAS DISAPPOINTED BY ON SOME LEVEL:

    Graveyard - Innocence and Decadence

I really loved their last two releases but this felt a little neutered to me. Also with the pace slowed and guitars turned down some questionable song writing was highlighted. Still not a bad listen, just not what I was expecting.

    Meat Wave - Delusion Moon

Their EP Brothers was also released this year and it got me all frothy for the full length, which is fine but didn't hit me the way I hoped it would.

    Joanna Gruesome - Peanut Butter

I thought their last release, Sisters, was amazing and I hoped they would keep pushing the envelope but PB feels a lot toned down from the frantic pop violence of their first album. Again, a fine album, just not world dominating like I expected.

Murder By Death - Big Dark Love

I do like this record, it's just that my expectations were sky high after Bitter Drink... It's quite good just a victim of MBD's high standards. Also the covers album this year wasn't as good, although I guess that's not really their fault.

    STUFF I LIKED:

    Foo Fighter - St. Cecilia

Solid - typical Foo. It was cool that they gave it away

Cage The Elephant - Tell Me I'm Beautiful

This album is only a week old but after about a dozen spins I think it is their weakest to date. This may very well grow out of this category into STUFF I LOVED eventually but it's definitely the least alternative rock-y release they've had.

    STUFF I LOVED:

Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit

This record completely dominated the late spring - early summer. She is an amazing songwriter and this album completely rocks.

    Diamond Rugs - Cosmetics

This is a side project for a bunch of guys, most notably (to me) the lead singer for Deer Tick. This album is amazing even better than their last release in 2012.

    Laura Stevenson - Cocksure

Beautiful but rocking record, that is her best since Sit Resist.

Antarticgo Vespucci - Leavin' La Vida Loca

I didn't think I liked this record at first - it seemed to be background noise but it grew and grew on me until I found myself craving it and then screaming it in the car alone.

    Bastardous - Bastardous

I saw them in April at the Suicide Machines show in Boston and was blown away. I waited seven months for the vinyl and the record did not disappoint. Really great stuff and completely dominating my iPod/turntable right now. Rally of the Crows is my favorite track but they have virtually no presence on youtube, so the best link I can provide is their bandcamp.

Leftover Crack - Constructs of the State

Is this a dispassionate LoC or just mature? I don't know what's going on, the band has definitely lost its manic edge but this record is a really fun listen.

STUFF THAT RULED MY LIFE FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME:

    Hop Along - Painted Shut

I was like a crack addict for this record. I was checking twitter and Facebook and instagram for over a year hoping for any mention about if and when there would be a new record. It was amazing, she's such a great song writer and I love their whole sound.

    Busdriver - Thumbs

I am very particular about the rap I listen to but this album (technically a mixed tape?) really hit me in the sweat spot. Great beats, good flow and well used guest spots on each track.

Break Anchor - In A Van Down By the River

Think of Dead to Me mixed with The Suicide Machines.

    Jeff Rosenstock - We Cool?

    All hail all things Brosenstock.

I can't figure out how to get it to embed the videos consistently. If someone has a tip let me know.

  4. Virgil sent me a list of the VC rules in a text file in 2006. Let me look on my old laptop for them.

Edit: found them. This is copied verbatim. I have to believe all still apply (unless Big Boo from ShopRadioCast chimes in and refutes any of these).

    Vinyl Collective Rules

    By V and the Community

#1. Treat other posters with respect. We are all here to discuss vinyl and share in the enjoyment of music. Don't say anything you wouldn't say to your brother, mother, or best friend.

#2. Don't enter any trade or purchase transactions that you feel uncomfortable with. We provide the buy/trade/sell forum as a convenience yet we can't always police each and every transaction. Use your best judgement. We are hoping to have a feedback system in place soon (maybe summer).

#3. Post pre-orders for records only. We love music and CDs are a music format but this is vinyl collective, not CD Collective.

#4. If you are an early adopter for the up vote/down vote system, use it respectfully. Only down vote posts that you think make VC a lesser place to discuss music. Only up vote posts that you think make VC a better place to discuss music. That said, if you get a down vote, don't complain or ask who voted; learn from the down vote and try to improve. Moderators will not reveal identities of down voters or mediate disputes arising from the voting system.

#5. You can PayPal money for tickets for Virgil's Beer Tour directly to me at [email protected]. Right now, we are 80% funded.

#6. Please stop asking for Green Day represses in every pop punk related thread. We get it. You want Dookie and Insomniac on black vinyl and are willing to pay the inflated price of $14.99 for them. Please don't derail every thread to ask for them.

#7. The Overstock.com deals thread is for deals. Posting $3-4 7"s is in no way a good deal.

    Rules added in Dec 2008:

#8. Now that we have a feedback system for buying and selling, remember that you don't have to use it very much. For example, if a user sells you an LP for really cheap, mails it out within 24 hours, sends you the tracking number immediately, answers your follow up questions, and provides a generally great buying experience, don't necessarily leave them good feedback- especially if the user has only 8 feedback scores. Let him stay at 8 despite having sold upwards of 20 LPs to the community.

#9. Poop-related usernames are now allowed.

#10. Flipping has become a big issue as vinyl grows more popular again. If you know someone has flipped a record, report them to a mod UNLESS they display a real rebellious, give-no-fucks attitude toward the world in general. If this is the case, they can flip and you have to apologize for ever getting in their way.

#11. If you ever want to see this list, ask Barry Keiferson aka Bake to post them. I've sent him the list of VC rules in a text file as a backup in case new versions of Invision Board software remove this list of rules sticky feature.

    #12. Have fun!

  5. Travis has an Excel document where he logs how many requests for an album he gets in this thread.  When the tally reaches 250, then he knows that Hot Topic will be able to press the 800 copies necessary for a release (estimated 250 will be sold to VCers, 150 to regular non-VC shoppers, and the rest go to lazylabradorrecords on eBay).  So, if you've been clamoring for an ETID repress but not seeing any change or progress it is likely because its the same few posters asking for it and not 250 different posters.
