I'll be in Tokyo from October 4-6!! Let me know if you guys want to do a record store day! Lived there years ago so can get around fine, need to refresh myself on record stores though haha.
Also TOTALLY take advantage of the tanking yen, I lived there when it was 77yen to a dollar, so things around 150 now are super cheap if you come in as a tourist!
As much as I would love to make this happen, it's not possible. I just double checked and we're leaving on October 5th from Portland, but we're not arriving until the next afternoon, on the 6th. I had my dates a bit off. Damn, dude. So close...!

You two must meet in Tokyo, take a photo and upload it here! Also October is an awesome month to visit Japan, I travelled all over the country several years ago.
Hmm, I'll be in Tokyo from Oct 5-8...Then elsewhere. I have yet to research shops in Osaka or Kyoto. I've only got the two chains mentioned above in Tokyo but will do some further digging before leaving.

I only hit the chains on this run, only had limited time before load in/soundchecks. Disk Union and Tower Records are full of gems.
Happy digging!
I'll be sure to hit those, and hope I stumple on some well curated shops that have hard to find gems.

What 2 albums of hers would you recommend someone listen to first?
I'd echo what was said below, I think Ultraviolence is her best album by a pretty fair margin.
-
I'l second 2nd avenue records in Portland if you like metal and hardcore. Check out Tomorrow Records on Hawthorne, it's very well curated.

Just got back from a tour in Japan and snagged just under 25 records.. 100 Yen (which is typically the equivalent to 1 USD) is currently worth $0.69 USD.. So some extremely hard to find records we're all about 30% off.
Tristeza - Dream Signals In Full Circles
Red Hot Chili Peppers - One Hot Minute (Euro 1st Press, 2xLP)
GBV - Universal Truths and Cycles
Beck - Mellow Gold (Mother Load Mispress)
Bitch Magnet - Ben Hur (1st Press)
Idlewild - Hope Is Important (1st Press)
Were just a couple of my favorite finds.
Wow. Nice. Any record stores to recommend, in general?

I've been 2 times and managed to hit around100 stores in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. The big flea market in Tokyo at the race track is also a killer place to find records. I could go on all day. Japan is my favorite place on earth.
Any stores that stood out for curation and rarities? I'll be going to all three of those cities in October.

I sold the OG UO variant a while ago but will pick this up. Her best album imo.
Agreed. She shot her wad early, but most of the rest have been enjoyable as well. Still not too sure about this latest release, or the last one.

Yeah, they were great live, but this was by far the most electric track they played.

All that already discounted stuff gets discounted again in your cart though...
That Conan record I got is typically $30+shipping and I got it for $18 out the door. That MoFi American Beauty is $60+shipping retail, got it for $38.
Even my "worst" deal on that Wailing Souls record saved me $5 plus shipping.
Yeah, that American Beauty album is a great deal. If I didn't own it already, I'd jump on it.

10-40% off, most are 10% off.

They haven't let me down yet. In for a Red!

Acoustic Sounds marked down a few hundred titles. Especially worth looking through if you like jazz, but there's a decent amount of rock/punk/metal/etc:

Free FedEx shipping for orders over $49, too.
Thanks for posting this. I ended up with five Neil albums that I'd been on the edge about getting for awhile. An average of $16 each made it an easy decision.

Anyone know of a VMP discount code? That 2nd edition of the GD set looks nice, but not $479 nice...

Didn't that get suspended last year and was still under review or is it definitely in effect for 2023?
AFAIK, it's in effect for this year. Last year was suspended. Hopefully it's suspended this year too, but from what I understand they're going to enforce it next year for the 2023 year. Such a joke to go from 20k to $600. Typical bureaucracy.
-
Between this and having to pay tax on anything over $600 per year, it looks like I'll be selling just under $600 per year for the next few years.
-
Is the titty back-cover on the green variant?
-
-
I actually appreciate that they're taking the self parody to the fullest extent. Oh Maynard, you're brilliant. If people are that dumb, go ahead and rob 'em blind.
-
Of all days to not check VC. Bummed I missed these. Nice score for those who did!
-
So now this $600 rule won't kick in until next year, to give out K-1's in '24?

I’m on that same boat. Been a fan since ‘92 as well. It’s infuriating the crap they release. Their trolling merch is getting as insufferable as all the crap that Taylor Swift puts out as her merch.
The biggest sticking point for me on this thing is why release it during this time of year when people are struggling & have been struggling financially. That’s what pisses me off the most.
You think they care about their fans? The only thing they care about is milking them for all they can with all this kitchy crap. A whole lot of irony going on here.

Damn...! I'm thoroughly impressed by a few of the shops I've visited. Namely the Disk Union shops in Tokyo, and Time Bomb in Osaka. My Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, and PJ Harvey collections just added some white wails.
