I listened to it once through the other day. I thought it was more of the same, maybe a step down from IV, but still extremely engaging and worthy of standing up to earlier material. I'm surprised you don't like IV! In the back of my mind I always pegged you and I as having very similar tastes, but I think IV is probably their best, along with II.

Yeah, we do have similar tastes. I always pay attention when you recommend something, and generally like it. I think IV has a couple of good tunes but it doesn't flow nearly as well as their other records, but I feel like I'm missing something because lots of people love it. I think you are dead on that Vortex is more of the same, but I'm ok with that. I'm not someone that is always looking for bands to find inventive ways to write music. While it can be nice, I find when bands stray into new territory, I lose interest. There are definitely notable exceptions.

II and III are excellent, but I has that hardcore influence that waned as they matured. Holy hell, some of those riffs are catchy.

Actually that dude might like Long Distance Calling too.....  they're a very riff-centered band.

Why are you talking about him like he's not here?

Has anyone been listening to the new Toundra? Any opinions out there? I like it, don't like IV very much (I've tried to like it), so I am happy about this one. For full disclosure, I is my favorite by far.

    RUNNERS-UP: Heron - You Are Here Now | Shipwrecks - S/T | I/O - Anyone, Anywhere | L'Effondras - Les Flavescences

    DISAPPOINTING: Oiseaux-Tempête - Al-'An!... | GY!BE - Luciferan Towers | To Destroy A City - Go Mirage
ONLY HEARD ONCE/NEED TO REVISIT: Silent Whale Becomes a Dream - Requiem | Hammock - Mysterium | Icor - S/T | BLAK - Between Darkness and Light

(There are quite a bit more in that last category, too, but for brevity's sake I'll cap it there)

I really like that Gullwing record. Superficially, I don't particularly care for the name.

New Toundra this year? I'm pretty stoked for that too!

  4. I bought Utopiod, only 6 euros for shipping from Pelagic. I pick it up more because they are Rosetta; it is my least favorite of theirs so far. I'm willing to give it more listens. They are playing Sydney on Saturday at a pretty awesome venue with Sleepmakeswaves. Should be a pretty fun night. I feel like I've become kind of a hermit, so it's a big deal when I go to a show. I tend to buy tickets and then when the day comes I don't feel like going.

Looks like 2018 is shaping up to be a big music year for me. Two of my favorites are recording right now: Latitudes and Glaciers. The last Latitudes has been on heavy rotation since its release (easily top 3 of 2016 for me). I always get nervous when a band I love releases new music though. Fingers crossed.

Woah.  This is really good.  The Isis influence is all over this.  Kinda reminds me of Fall of Efrafa too a bit.

Edit:  Yeah holy fuck, this rules.  This might be a blind purchase.....  the last time I did this (PG.Lost) I got a bit burned because that album isn't nearly as strong as the first 2 singles, but man.... this has TONS of promise.  Also that splatter variant sounds like it would be incredible.

For what it's worth, I think they are one of the best bands in Australia right now.  I hope their record lives up to their performances.

I'm an idiot, I didn't even add in their name. For everyone else, their band name is: YLVA.

  6. A Melbourne band is about to release their debut record on Translation Loss (US) and Pelagic (Europe). New song is great, can listen here.  I think for fans of Isis and Rosetta I suppose. Has a spacey post-rock vibe towards the end.

Translation loss has a pretty cool variant that is Silver and Bone White Merge with Aqua Blue, Sea Blue and Olive Green Splatter, limited to 200.

The Pelagic variant is cool too, bone in clear (colour in colour).
