so does the band own their songs (music + lyrics) but the label own the recordings?

technically yes and no. If the songwriters signed a publishing deal with a publisher, they could have assigned a percentage of those rights. really depends on the specifics of their deal. the underlying rights for a composition are also split 50% Writers Shares and 50% publishing. Even if a song writers deal includes 50% of the publishing rights, they really are only signing away 25% of every dollar that comes in on the pub side. Rights can also revert depending on the specifics of the deal.

For the master rights (ie recording), it depends on the deal with the label, but usually the label will own the rights and after so many years (by law) the artist can re-record, which you are seeing with a lot of older artists. This too also depends on the deal signed.

Record and publishing deals are become more and more favorable to the artists due to the access and ability to record/release music independently. However, having the backing of label/publisher can really help your career as they will typically spend money on marketing, since its an investment.  For every 10 artists that are signed to a big label, typically on 1-2 really see profit for the labels/publishers.

Unfortunately a lot of bands from the 90s/2000s only saw $$ when signing their deals and signed away their rights. Shady from the labels, but that's why its important to have a entertainment/contracts lawyer and not your best friend from high school managing/advising you.

I work for a major Music Publisher, so this is my wheelhouse.

Forgot about the stream last night, decided to watch it today. As I predicted many pages ago, not an encrypted stream, was live, and then just transcoded and stored on Vimeo. Managed to get a download with a Python library https://github.com/MCDELTAT/vimeo-download

    EDIT:
UGGH. Doesn't seem like they invested that much in the livestreaming side of things. At the beginning you see they were running the stream on an iMac with OBS. At the beginning of Track 3 "There Could Be Nothing After This" you can literally see the the CPU is being pegged and isn't able to keep up with real-time transcoding. The latency is pretty bad at that segment and a few others. Would have been much better on a PC using a GPU and NVENC since they have so many frames that are fast moving, with lots of contract, basically the definition of what breaks most CPU encoders. Still looks pretty good though.

    EDIT2:
Yeah Track 7 "Casting Such a Thin Shadow" is perhaps even better example of this. There has to be 2-3 seconds of audio delay there. Watch at like 40:44 with Aaron's drum parts.

would love a share if possible too :)

pretty sure the $39.98 is the subtotal before sales tax and shipping, which adds up to $53.03.

that's what I was wondering but they said they would only be shipping me 1 copy (I ordered an extra for my brother). if I only get 1 copy but they don't refund for the second, then there will be an issue. we will see!

“We will, therefore, be refunding all orders with multiple copies so that only 1 of any variant is dispatched.”

does that mean we are partially refunded, and only get 1 shipped? Had ordered two myself. Or does this mean full refund, and we’ll have to reorder to try and get 1?

my order status on my account shows "partially refunded" but still unfulfilled. I don't have any partial refund in my account though, so who knows what kind of shady shit they will pull with keeping more than half of my orders payment.

Maybe we can limit it to one per household.

Giving VC a heads up would be a little more unfair than the alternative

one per household is the way to go. would also be nice to let people who haven't gotten a chance to buy the opportunity before opening it up to 'variant collectors' who are just going to let this sit in their collection instead of playing it.

  6. after hearing that awful chainsmokers single and the imagine dragons wannabe single I had no hope for this record. I'm actually quite surprised how many of these other songs I enjoy. still it will never be blink 182 to me with Matt Skiba, there still is hope though that they can write decent pop-punk/rock songs.
