OBITS / BED & BUGS - SP1058 Obits are a four-piece band who currently live in Brooklyn, NY, and whose music is probably considered an occupant of the rock music genre, specifically in the areas of garage, punk, surf, surf-punk, and garage-punk (though, not surf-garage). On this new album, they’ve also covered a song (“Besetchet”) from volume 23 of the excellent Ethiopiques series; so much for tidy categorization. The album for which this clumsy biographical dispatch has been prepared is entitled Bed & Bugs and it is the third full-length album by Obits, following their 2011 album Moody, Standard and Poor, which itself followed their 2009 album I Blame You, which we in the professional music industry refer to as the band’s “debut.” Bed & Bugs was recorded somewhere in Arlington, VA at an unnamed recording studio, simply and rather unhelpfully described as “upstairs.” This recording was accomplished by Nikhil Ranade, and the resulting songs were later mixed, variously, by this same Nikhil Ranade as well as Eli Janney and Geoff Sanoff.
On listening to Bed & Bugs, the discerning listener may well note more than a passing similarity to such bands as Hot Snakes, Edsel, Drive Like Jehu, Girls Against Boys, Pitchfork, possibly Television or the Wipers. This is un-coincidental! With the exception of those last two, Obits share members with all of those bands.
Less flippantly: There are scenes and there are connections; trending hashtags and experiences. It’s cool, these are not either/or propositions and there’s no need to postulate any us vs. any them, the kids today and the back in my day. Much of what’s best about any music, all art, across genres, within and beyond the latest craze, is the way it speaks to some definition of “us.” Proving, as Obits sing in Bed & Bugs’ “Receptor,” that “You ain’t the world’s lone receptor,” is deeply valuable. Because we’re all headed to the same place: me today, you tomorrow. And, in that waning interstitial space, let’s go ahead and have what we want. No need to choose: make ours both Bed & Bugs.
Listen, guys…we have a couple of kind of cool limited-edition-y types of things to tell you about regarding this latest, and, we’re not going to mince words about it, greatest Obits record. Firstly, if you pre-order Bed & Bugs on CD or LP, you’ll receive, at no additional cost to you, a ltd-ed Obits single featuring three songs performed live, and very well, mind you, by The Obits. Another thing we’d like you to know about regarding this new record is that, if you’re a person who prefers the vinyl format as their sound delivery device of choice, we’re pressing a small amount of this record on limited, colored, Loser Edition vinyl, which will only be available on SubPop.com (conveniently located right here), as well as select independent record retailers in America (call your local record store for availability). And we don’t have to tell you, but just in case, the limited nature of limited-edition things is limited by nature, so order quick to claim yours!
    Released: September 10, 2013

Consisting of two absolutely epic songs from each band, the Across Tundras/Lark's Tongue split LP is the first collaboration between these two groups. Across Tundras was born on the Western High Prairie and has been sighted recently in the hills north of Nashville, TN. Countless mysterious audio artifacts and sonic expeditions have been made by the un-herd collective since their inception in 2003, both delighting and bewildering musical excavators who have encountered the aural, physical, and meta-evidence of this pastoral beast.
Hailing from the Midwest, Lark's Tongue formed in 2010 of seasoned travelers informed by all manners of cosmic pursuits. They conjure heavy, layered psychedelia with an emphasis on harmony and narrative, atop beguiling squalls of guitar, shimmering keys, and a thick low-end.

This LP comes packaged in a gatefold layout with woodcuts from Travis Lawrence @ Infinity Prints.
    Pressing info:

    150 - White vinyl

I never waited in line at Generation, I just usually walk there after OM.  but OM and Kims both around 7a.  if you want to be top ten people in line.  three years ago they were giving away free Regina Spector tickets and when I got there at 7 there were people in line from the night before but that was just generally for Regina.

don't know about Generation.  I would say 7a ish

Got my ordered today and the Pygmy Lush LP happened to be the clear with red /50 and the Frodus 7" had the alternative cover and was clear yellow. Anybody know anything about the clear yellow Frodus? Discogs only lists the clear. Anyway, cool surprises nonetheless.

Spazz boxset.  The albums just got repressed so I'm not going to shout that this needs to happen, but I'd love to see some of these older trash / hardcore / crust / etc, get release as boxsets.
