Great read. And I completely agree that there definitely needs to be more of a community beyond internet collecting hoo-hah. The attitude of "everything in my collection is for sale" is definitely an interesting one - maybe that's what happens when you get old. I kid.

Occasionally in person. But if you miss the mailman then you have to go to the post office the next day, with the mail slip and some ID. Otherwise they get mailed back.

So, I am showering when I hear the mailman knocking on my door. I've been waiting for a package of records for a few days. BUT, I am moving in two days and am paranoid about being unable to retrieve them from the post office at a later date - my schedule is pretty firm. So I moan and whine and my gf dares me to go get them in a towel (yeah, we shower together like it's NBD). I go, dripping wet. The mailman laughs. I feel stupid as shit. But, I got the records. WHAT WOULD YOU DO!? ps - in case you were wondering, it was Jets to Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary and Cursed - III: Architects...

So my gf and I are driving from New York to Saskatchewan, Canada in a couple of days. Basically, we have everything planned but we don't know where to stop in-between Chicago and New York. Anywhere halfway will be fine but we don't really know those cities in that area very well. Basically we are looking for halfway cheap in terms of a hotel, but also somewhere with plenty of things to do/record stores/vegetarian restaurants. Also, my gf is huge into music gear too. Any ideas would be helpful! Cheers!
