  1.

I have a ton of El Jefe Design posters (The Gaslight Anthem, Dave Hause, etc) and the older ones are 19x25 which made it hard to find frames. IKEA has several series of frames that are slightly larger (inner dimensions of 19.75x25 which gives room for a nice border/background. They're affordable as well. The cheapest ones are horrid but the next ones up are great and look nice up on the wall.

As for show or promo posters that are 11x17, Walmart makes some good ones with real glass. The ones from Michael's were twice the price and very cheap plastic.

Those look great man. What did you use for the border/background? The color match is perfect.

  2. yeah you'll definitely need more than one pallet.. i think the most ive received on one was in the 2k range.

also..its a little pricey but i'd suggest dropping a lil coin on dj road cases for your more rare/expensive stuff - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Odyssey-LP-Case-CLP200P-Carpeted-DJ-Vinyl-Road-Case-Holds-200-Records-LPS-CLP200-/290926767714?pt=US_Rack_Cases_Hard_Cases_Bags&hash=item43bc962e62#ht_4109wt_1109  i have a couple of these i use for festivals and they work great

Thanks for the info. I actually have a bunch of plastic bins from target that fit records perfectly but they aren't sturdy enough for bulk shipping. I'm just going to pack up a few of those with my more expensive/rare stuff and bring them in the car with me.

When you receive bulk orders on pallets how are they typically packed? How high approximately? I'm guessing it was a bunch of smaller cardboard boxes packed with 25-50 records, stacked and the whole pallet wrapped tightly with plastic wrap?

Are the records typically stacked in the boxes horizontally on top of eachother or vertically? (i've seen a bunch of debate about this one, i'm leaning towards packing them upright, side by side)

  3. I was thinking more plastic boxes as you wont want to stack more than 3 high with cardboard boxes and to be honest I wouldn't go more than 4 high with plastic boxes, it's a huge amount of weight.

I moved house with around 5000 LP's all in cardboard boxes that were 12.5" cubes but I moved them all myself in a few trips and it was only 30 miles or so.

You could stack some boxes on a pallet I suppose and then make a wooden packing case around that, well protected and easy to move for the shipper but with 5000 you might need more than one pallet.

Do you know of a particular plastic types of boxes that works well for LP's? I'm most worried about the sturdiness of the boxes and if I could find some reasonably priced, stack-able, heavy duty plastic ones that would be preferable.

  4. Very sturdy boxes, especially if you plan on stacking them. Weight from height will be the biggest problem so quiz whoever is shipping it on how they are going to overcome the obvious problems, if you make them think about it they are going to take more care.

Consider the weight in a single box and think about it some more as you are probably going to ask someone else to do all the moving for you.

Consider the length of time it will spend in those boxes and if it's a long time think about temperature and humidity changes etc.

Also if you haven't got it all catalogued on somewhere like Discogs then do it, you can do an export to Excel with values to use for insurance.

I was actually hoping I could load a pallet myself and have them pick it up. I trust myself stacking them more than some random freight employee. Not sure if that's possible though.

Any recommendations on particularly sturdy boxes?

  5. Alright folks, i'm planning a move cross country (Florida to Oregon) and i'm trying to figure out the logistics of getting all my records cross country. I think i'm probably going to pay for some kind of freight rather than a u-haul since i'm going to take my time during the trip and want to be driving my own car.

Anywho I haven't counted but between everything i've collected and the records my father passed down to me I probably have at least 5,000 records I need to move. I'm not even sure the best way to pack such a large quantity, anyone have some tips or recommendations? I was thinking of doing a pallet but i'm worried about stacking too high and damaging records on the bottom.

Maybe some labels and/or distros have some tips?

  6. Frankly, I think the hypothetical situation is a little different.  The grocery store in this situation is the record label ("Oh my god this label bought some plastic for a dollar and they pressed some grooves on it and now they're selling it for $25??? wtf!!!")

The situation of flipping is much different... Imagine someone went into your grocery store, and bought all the bananas for $1 each. Then they set up a little stand right outside the grocery store, and sold the same bananas for $5 a piece (ebay).

Then you are like "Forget this shit! I'll go to the other grocery store." But, when you get there, you find that all of THEIR bananas are gone too, and there's a guy outside THEIR store selling bananas for $3 each (discogs).

There's one more grocery store in a 50 mile radius and you go there and there's another guy selling bananas for $2 each outside (VC or other niche forums).

Eventually you say fuck it, and pay the higher price. You either want bananas or you don't. But, it's the people buying the bananas in order to make their own profit (flippers) on top of the grocery store's own profits (record labels) that cause the price to go from $1 to $5.

I think you would be surprised how cheap bananas would be if they weren't essentially "flipped" by companies like Chiquita. The only difference between record flippers and them is that bananas are "flipped" before they get to the grocery store and records are flipped after. The same concepts apply to both.

As for someone buying out all the bananas from grocery stores and reselling them trust me someone would be doing it if the price/market would allow it.

The only way to "solve" flipping is for labels to stop doing a million different pressings in small quantities, which will never happen because it is a way for them to get people to buy the same record multiple times.

  7. I don't think it has anything to do with profiting.  It's more about the fact that the dude has owned the same record on three separate occasions -- the last of which has resulted in a copy that he's not even going to open or play.  He's holding onto the album solely to flip it... and it's an album that he's clearly not all that crazy about to begin with.  That is what's being frowned upon, more or less.

For clarification, I didn't neg his post.  Just providing a little insight.

The same argument can be made for nearly everything that is sold for a profit. Yet no one goes "Oh my gawd this grocery store bought all this food without the intention of eating it?!?! They bought all this food for the sole purpose of selling it for a profit? WTF?!?!"

It's a dumb and useless thing to get angry about. Bitching about flippers isn't suddenly going to make the principles of supply and demand no longer apply to the medium.

  8. I'd hardly call that "cussing him out", but , yes, actually. My friend works for banquet and he def heard from me cause of how high they sold it. First hand flipping -- gotta love it.

You gave your friend shit because the company he works for was selling a record at a price too high for your liking? No offense, but you sound like a twat of a friend.

  9. I know what you're saying, but it's a bit of a catch 22. Do you call and bother the store emploee, knowing they're probably pretty busy? Or, do you get in your car, battle mall traffic, search for a parking spot (possibly for a while), and THEN bother the store employee?

You could just suppress your urge to have your colored piece of plastic right now and wait until after Christmas.

  10. Posted this about a month or so ago after I had just moved in but finally getting settled so I thought I'd post an update.  All the framed albums are autographed.  If anyone is looking for record frames for cheap Michael's has all frames for 40% off this week and you can get an additional 25% off coupon on their site which can be used on sale items.  Total deal.

Looks awesome man. Approximately how many records is that setup holding for you?

  11. Ok. So recordshopx.com was the first place to put this up, as mentioned in the optional post. They claimed to have a limited red version /666, that they now say is sold out. They still have black vinyl copies for sale.

Shopradiocast.com had exclusive copies on clear vinyl, limited to 2500. These are also now sold out, but they are still selling copies on black vinyl.

Amazon.de had copies claiming to be the red vinyl version. Many on here ordered this version. I believe that this is now unavailable to order. Seems as though the validity of the claim that these will actually be on red, is questionable.

Soundstagedirect.com has this available, also saying they have red copies.

Amazon.com now has this available, though expensive. Currently $50. Description says red vinyl as well.

So, it sounds as if you want this, plan on being happy with black. Looks as though probably 10,000 copies were sold claiming to be red with only 666 available. Should be interesting around here when these actually start arriving.

You are a good man (or woman). Thanks!

  12. In Hot Topic's defense, I'll bet the licensing fees for many of these releases are outrageous.

Meh, I don't buy that being the reason. They just know a bunch of people will happily pay $20-$25 so that's what they are charging. I don't neccesarily blame them, they are a large corporation and their goal is to make money. It's what they do. I just can't help to think that while flawed (see MTS and suburban home) i'd much prefer to see these represses being done by smaller labels/distros. As much shit as RJ got for MTS (which he deserved) he did at least put together really nice looking, high quality 2xLP packages when he charged $25 a pop. Hot Topic is charging nearly the same for high run, single LP's in cheap/standard packaging.

  13. Yeah, it came with the anchors but I pitched them.  I've never anchored the shelves before and didn't consider it until it was brought up today because everything seemed quite sturdy.  Yes, the receiver is a Haran Kardon HK-2490.  I love it too, except for those plastic feet on the bottom which have broken off, except for 1.  Have yours done the same?  I think I might just cut 4 dowels about a 1/2" long and glue them to the bottom as feet and put a felt pad on each.  I'm tired of junky plastic.

I honestly never even gave the feet enough attention to notice they were plastic, never had any problems with them and seem sturdy enough to me. With that said I haven't really moved it around much at all since buying it.

  14. No mounts at the moment.  Didn't consider it since we don't have kids yet and it seems extremely sturdy.  My dad is full of good ideas so next time he's down I'll ask him what he thinks the best way to mount it is and implement something.

Like someone said earlier they should have came with anchors but if you can't find them it should be easy enough for your dad to rig something together. With that said your setup does look really great man! Is that receiver a Harman Kardon HK-3490? If so I have the same one, love it.

  15. I've done this stack method for quite a while with no issues.  I didn't even think about stacking them vertical, next to each other  (Where were you when I needed you for suggestions ;) ).....as far as being a safer bet, possibly?  I may rearrange it in the future but will leave it this way for now since I haven't had any issues and my back is tired of lifting records

Are these being anchored or mounted on the walls in any way? Really not trying to bust your balls here but if not that setup could be super dangerous, especially if you ever have any children around.
