  1. http://www.bosia.org/cafe.html I swear by this coffee from Nicaragua. I spent a lot of time in Nicaragua doing coffee tasting, and this is the best stuff I've found (Maybe I'm biased, but I've always found Nicaraguan coffee to have more flavor than Costa Rican or Salvadoran beans). Its very flavorful and tastes great black. I usually make it in a mocha pot, but its also great in a french press or as espresso.
  2. I was listening to the Achtung Chicago! Drei comp and was really digging this track "Full Speed Ahead" by the band Scary Monsters. I couldn't find anything on this band in a quick google search, does anyone know anything about this band or if they have other recordings?
  3. How can you tell? I think I have the purple one, but its more like purple vomit.
  4. Here's some random suggestions based on what I have been able to find. Mostly metal and surf. Mexico has a great surf scene, if you like Man or Astroman or other similar bands, check out: Sr. Bikini, Los Coronas, Fenomeno Fuzz, Lost Acapulco. There are also a million metal bands of all kinds. One of the best I like is The Chasm (and the main dude's previous band, Cenotaph). There is also a thrash revival type band called Piraña that is pretty decent. There are a couple old school death metal bands (a la early Death, Master, Possessed style) that are pretty cool: Teratogeny, Toxodeth, and early Transmetal (this band is huge, but the later stuff gets really lame). One of my favorite Mexican bands is this old school punk band from the early 80s called Dangerous Rhythm. They have a cdep called Electro Shock that you might be able to find, and a self-titled LP. Both are great, very much influenced by the Clash. Ska is also huge in Mexico, although I couldn't recommend any band in good conscience. I did happen to see this band called Niño Zombi play here in Albuquerque while on tour, if you Voodoo Glow Skulls type stuff you'd probably dig it. One of the most famous ska bands from the 90s is Maldita Vecindad, but I can't stand it. There is one trad ska band called Toño Quirazco from the 60s, its alright but has a weird hawaiian influence. I came across this blog awhile back: http://www.mexicore.blogspot.com/. Looks pretty terrible to me, but lots of new metal, "death-core" and other heavy bands. In general, there are very few indy labels that I've come across when buying music there. There just isn't the money to support a label. Most stuff is available pirated, or online. My sense is the collector aspect of the scene that is so prevalent here is very very small there. I definitely don't claim to be an expert on the Mexican scene, I just try to pick up a few new bands whenever I go there, but my general impression is that there is a lot in common with the bands, styles of music and scenes between the US, Canada and Europe, but very little in common with Mexico. There is a lot going on in Mexico, but what is popular is a lot different.
  5. I'm also from New Mexico, never heard Brokencyde and never want to. I also go to Mexico all the time and have family (in-laws) there, is there a reason you are asking about Mexico?
  6. I don't really see the anti-Obama slant in the show. The health care thing was in the original, the visitors promised to cure all diseases. Calling it universal health care in the remake I guess could be seen as anti-Obama, but its a bit of stretch. Using the term universal health care is salient in the present context and makes sense in terms of the remake since its a commonly heard term in today's political dialogue.
  7. Here's some I want to get rid of: The Cure - faith/carnage visors The Cure - standing on a beach The Cure - kiss me kiss me kiss me Seaweed - Four Skinnerbox NYC - Tales of the Red
  8. I definitely support the cd idea as well, anything to get the costs down. What about a greatest hits or highlights of the box set release? I wouldn't be so hesitant to buy this if I was confident it was all amazing stuff. I just can't imagine that all of the material in the box set is something I would listen to more than once. I love floor and torche, but how much of the set is low quality demos and live stuff?
  9. I meant to add this as well: Captain Beyond - Sufficiently Breathless $7

  11. I think the new Safari is horrible. I can't disable the cover flow feature in the bookmarks menu, and I hate how they rearranged the toolbar on the browser. I haven't used it enough to see if it crashes less, but damn cover flow, what a fucking terrible idea...
  12. A few lesser known records I would recommend: Thoughts of Ionesco (detroit)-...and then there was motion, and a skin historic day of suffering (NC?)-the eternal jihad suicide nation (arizona) - their split 7" with creation is crucifixion is awesome, their s/t LP is pretty good. Milwaukee had some pretty cool bands like straight forward, up in arms, 7 angels 7 plagues (maybe not 90s?), kill the slavemaster Chicago's Race Traitor are worth checking out, maybe not the best recorded band, but they were incredibly controversial while they were around. Detroit had a decent scene also: Earthmover, bloodpact, varsity, next2nothing, and a lot more that I can't remember
  13. I have another 7" by Harbor called "Breaker" and on the insert it says they also have this split out with Harvest. I guess it is possible the record never came out, the Harbor 7" is Mr. White Records 003, and the split is MWR005.
  14. The record is called "Density is what you put into it... a hardcore split" released on Milwaukee's Mr White Records in the mid-90s. I don't know much of anything about this release, I've never seen it and I can't find any info online. Help?
  15. How was the show? Do you know if Pegboy or the Bollweevils are going to release new material?
  16. I always press my tofu like a few others have mentioned. I usually wrap it in a towel and put something heavy on it for about 20 minutes. I used to always freeze my tofu first and then thaw it out and press it, it gives the tofu a tougher and spongier texture, but it takes a lot of extra time so I stopped that. My favorite recipe that I make all the time: Its basically a tofu massaman curry (thai) After pressing the tofu, I cut it up into small squares, pan fry then in oil until both sides are brown. Then in a wok, I add a can of coconut milk, a cup of water, and a can of thai curry paste (any kind works, but avoid the thai kitchen brand, its weak stuff). I let that heat up and mix it well, then I add the tofu, and any veggies. I usually just add onions and peanuts, but I've tried potatoes, broccoli, eggplant, and carrots and its all good.
  17. What cover and what release is it on?
  18. I love this guy. His gospel stuff is intense, it makes all his pop stuff seem really weak.
