Blazkowitz
Hello chaps! I have a really quick question. I recently upgraded my audio setup from a turntable (a lovely 80s Sony semi-auto) + Art Preamp + Harman Kardon powered speakers to the same turntable + Cambridge Audio Topaz AM10 amp (I'm not using a preamp right now, as the AM10 has an in-built phono stage + Gale Gold Monitor bookshelf speakers. While there was always a fair amount of bass in the old setup, I'm noticing even more in the new one, to the extent that it is almost unbearable to listen to LPs at higher levels. It seems that the lows are being over-amplified to the point where most are a very deep rumble. Does anyone know what could be wrong with my setup to be causing this? I'm not much of an audiophile, I just enjoy listening to my records, so any insight you might have would be really valuable. Thanks!
Tardcore
probably a dumb question, but what is the bass level set to? David Loyd and Requiescat

McCandless
I had this issue for a bit but it stopped once I properly cleaned my stylus.
slinch
First make sure you have properly positioned your speakers, on speaker stands appropriately distanced from nearby walls. Then comes the rest.
Blazkowitz
probably a dumb question. what is the bass level set to? Not a dumb question! It's set to 0 (I believe it goes to 10 in either direction). Obviously turning it down helps some, but I'm wondering why there's so much bass on the neutral setting. Thanks for the other replies, I'll try cleaning my stylus too. It is positioned fairly close to an alcove in my room (I'm a bit constrained for space right now). I'll also try repositioning and see how that goes on.
xxmartinxx
If it goes to 10 in either direction, you have the bass up half way, bring it down and see if you can EQ something more to your liking. That's why the knob is there.
Tardcore
it sounds like the levels of bass were too extreme to just fix with a tweek. as long as it's not cranked to 10, I would move on and try some of the other suggestions. The nature of your old set up (powered speakers) versus your new speaker/amp set up makes it a bit awkward to trouble shoot. You could try a few combinations to try to narrow it down. 1) try another source. 2) plug your TT into your old phono preamp and plug it into a non-phono input on your amp. 3) plug your old powered speakers into the recording output on your amp.
