davidhardy
Hello. I'm looking to pick the brains of some serous GNR vinyl collectors here to get a guide on finding a original presses of both the Use Your Illusion albums on vinyl. I've checked discogs and the like, but I'm still none the wiser. Also with the reissues I'm even more unsure about the stickers etc that should be on the cover. I found a great little guide on Live like a Suicide here: http://ticketsthere.com/2011/11/13/guns-n’-roses-–-live-like-a-suicide-vinyl-cassette-buyers-guide/ So I was wondering if anyone can help me out here with the same sort of thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
elnombre91
I'm not a serious gnr collector, but I'd guess this is the first press http://www.discogs.com/Guns-N-Roses-Use-Your-Illusion-I/release/2206780 ?
davidhardy
Thank you for the reply, but I'm still not sure.
bear801
How do the new 180g pressings sound?
davidhardy
I don't know how they sound as I don't have them yet. I'm just looking for anyone who know's how to spot a legitimate first pressing of these two albums.

One Hundred Fifty-Two
My dad's brother who lives in our basement right now might know. I'll have him page you.
ExtraFox
You might get more joy here, but you'll probably have to be more specific as to what you mean by a first press. Having given it a quick read, there were at least two completely different pressings in 1991 (German and US): http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/guns-n-roses-use-your-illusion-i-and-ii-vinyl-6-5.285027/
shamrocks
a 1991 Geffen pressing is a first pressing, as far as Im concerned. As far as stickers, etc. many of these will be out of the shrink and I suspect wont have any stickers. Any hype stickers you do find are likely to suggest repress ("now back on vinyl", "Back to Black" or "classic 1991 album", etc) me, I go with the US pressing here (the one linked above) although im not sure anyone will be able to tell you without a doubt which was pressed "first". there were several hundred thousand copies pressed around the world at this time, i think you have to consider all of them first presses, since I dont know of anyone who has compared matrix numbers, but a cursory glance reveals them to be very similar if not the same. to avoid a foreign pressing you could look for GEMA/BIEM/SEGA or something similar which would suggest a foreign society
elnombre91
I have first pressings of both albums, they're not in great condition unfortunately. Hopefully a good clean will sort them out.
aure69
two completely different pressings in 1991 (German and US): Hey Dave ! ExtraFox is right as far as I know there are two "first press" : US and Germany. Of course the better would be to get the US pressing. And stll from my information there has been no other pressings until 2008. The 2008 repress are easy to spot (180g + sticker + the cover has more saturated covers + there is more space to insert the records in the sleeve since it's 2x180g) so if it's not a 2008 repress and if it has been pressed in the US, I guess you can assume this is a first press. There was a black sticker on the EU CDs about offending lyrics but I haven't seen it on the vinyl. I guess there is more to find I am not a real specialist, just a casual fan ! By the way did you know that Use Your Illusion I sold 685,000 copies in its first week, II sold 770,000 copies. And people were waiting in line in front of Tower Records on the Sunset Strip and other shops at midnight to be the first ones to get it. Different times..., I have missed that era, I would like to be excited to get a record in a record store at midnight on its release day ! davidhardy
I think I have found something about the stickers I'm on about. It's think the German first pressing had a lyrics warning on them. The US had a parental advisory sticker with a circle sticker featuring a a couple if the songs included in the album. The US 180g repress that the wasn't back to black version has the same stickers, however the parental advisory sticker is different. I'll try and post some pictires later. dastodge
Can't help too much but dug out my copies of the German first presses, bought on release day - though not at midnight, I waited until after school. Pics of the sticker & codes below:
davidhardy
That's the sticker I was on about, thanks!
monddialle
My US pressing still sealed with stickers On all the american pressings I saw since 1992 the warning sticker always been in the upper left. Miss those days getting all excited after work on Monday night to go to tower and grab the new release! Remember saving up for an album for weeks? Hahaha. As for the newest pressing I was not thoroughly impressed....will give another spin on my new system but just didn't have the crank me up and bang my head vibe some of the mid 90s stuff does that's getting repressed as of late... monddialle
the top featuring tracks at that moment ( on UYI II in 1993 there was additional twice as bigger white sticker featuring Estranged) those were stuck usually in top right corner
vinyl addict
Whats so confusing? Discogs tells you everything. What else do you want to know. OP would be from Geffen 1991.
