andywax
So I'm flying to Texas tomorrow for Fun Fun Fun Fest and I'm taking 75 7"s with me for a band that's playing there. I'd rather carry-on the records than check them, has anyone had any problems carrying-on large amounts of vinyl on a flight?
dietrich
when I flew back from LA I carried on about 12 12" and they didn't say anything to me about it but i'm not sure what they would say about 75.
kirbypuckett
If it can't fit under your seat or in the overhead compartment (ie - the size of midsize luggage) you're going to have to check it.
andywax
I'm pretty sure the package will conform with size regulations. I'm more worried about the TSA making me check the package and getting to Austin and having smashed records.
flood
chris and i got hassled hardcore on out of Bradley for carrying about 75 lps on our way to fest... they searched my bags and xrayed the record boxes seperately, and they patted down chris and swabbed the boxes and ran tests on the swabs. hickey
It's always best to ship them there beforehand if that's an option.
smailtronic
Also, look into the type of plane you're flying on. If you're flying a mainline jet (737, MD-80, DC-9), you'll have a bigger overhead compartment to stash the package in. But if any of your legs are on a smaller, regional jet (ERJ, Canadair) you'll have to gate-check the package.

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. But if they let you on with them, then I think I'll be OK.

I would, but the band is leaving for Europe next week and I felt this was the only way to make sure they got them before hand.

To be fair, Chris does look like a terrorist.

go
Flying back from Chicago to Austria about 2 years ago, I carried a lot of vinyl in my hand luggage. Just wrapped it with some cardboard and took it on the plane. There were about 40 12"es and a good amount of 7"es. No problem except for the security check when they stopped the belt and looked at it closely. I was like "something wrong with the records?" and they just said "ah, ok, these are records!" ´cause they didn´t quite get it seeing it through Xray I believe. Other than that, I am glad that customs did not check the parcel Here´s a picture of half of the stuff: click.
tood
If you pack them separate you shouldnt have a problem. I got pulled aside a few weeks ago frying back to phx from austin cause they were having problems seeing the other items in my bag. "whos got the plates in there bag?" hbeez
Coming home from Toronto last summer I had a carry on bag of about 30 LPs. When I went through security one of the dudes stopped me, looked in the bag and said "Hey, our boy here's a DJ!"
j4m35
do you guys think i should put them in my checked baggage or in my carry-on? if i were to put them into my checked baggage i'd fit them all into lp mailers and put them on some clothes or something. I would carry them on if at all possible. But, depending on the total number, and plane size, you may have to check them. LP mailers in the center of your suitcase, completely surrounded by clothes or bubble wrap is about as safe as you could easily get. Keep in mind, in the baggage control operations of some major airports, bags drop 5+ ft from belt to belt, others have spring mounted arms that slam into bags, redirecting them onto different belts. The only way to guarantee safety is to keep them in your arms.
paintbrushes
when i flew back from the states last year i had about 20 records to take home. i packed them in record mailers, about five in each and then put them in a carry bag and nursed them all home on a 14 hour flight. i didn't have any trouble with the weight or it looking suspicious, but it seemed like when you were leaving america, they didn't give a shit about security. kyle
I took 75 7"s from LAX to El Paso two weeks ago and I had zero problems. I had a small bag and the box. I carried them on and they didn't mention it at all.
