Who goes to a creationist museum?

Recommended Posts

These people, apparently:

"I believe the Earth is around 5,500 years old. If you don't believe in Genesis, you don't believe in anything else."

Look, I don't care if you believe in God, Allah, Yahweh, Buddha, Mohammed or whatever -- but if you're on this board and you legitimately believe this planet is 6,000 years old and was created in six days, that seriously bums me out.

I liked this:

"I personally don't know, but natural selection seems to be the only thing people go on. It should be more open," he says. "There are sometimes better explanations for things, I mean people thought the earth was flat."

I never thought a creationist would use the "people used to think the world was flat" argument to assert even more absurd religious dogma.

It was so hard not to make cracks at creationism when I was teaching Grade 12 Geography for a few weeks. We looked at the unique species of animals in places like Australia and Madagascar and discussed how those places have animals unlike anywhere else in the world because the islands broke off from other continents so long ago they followed their own evolutionary path. I guess the other option is Noah had them all on his boat and conveniently redistributed them to their unique locales.

Some co-workers took a trip there, they are not religious at all, more for a fun time to laugh.

It also bums me out that people can think the earth is 5,500 years old. Those people need free subscriptions to the Discovery Channel and National Geographic...

yeah I can get over the fact that some people need to believe in imaginary beings and forces, but to not grasp the idea that the planet is what....like 900 Billion years old? I just watched one of those documentaries on the Discovery Channel about the theoretical history of the earth and the plate tectonic movement and the formation of the continents, etc. ...fascinating stuff...but regardless people need to understand physics and that you really can't fake Carbon 14 testing and deny that dinosaurs roamed the earth 65 Million years ago

...and that yes, we used to be monkeys and before that we were probably fish and before that we were probably micro-organisms(and all points in between) and that evolution does exist and got us to the point we're at now.

OK I am going to make a bit of a stupid comment here, but I guess that is not different from anything else I ever post here haha.

Now I am pretty open to anything I don't really have a solid belief but how is it that we evolved from monkeys yet it still isn't happening to this day.

Let's say that is what happened for sake of argument how is it that science hasn't found a way to repeat that process?

Because evolution took place over the course of 900 billion years. It's still happening now but there is no possible way to see it because any minute change takes at least hundreds of thousands of years.

exactly. you can see evidence of evolution fairly recently due to environmental changes.

and on a side note: as a biology major, I don't understand how anyone could still think the earth is 5,500 years old.

Masjohn has a good point. The effects of adaptation and mutation are more pronounced in insects, which have comparatively short life cycles.

Here's a link to the Wiki page for the peppered moth, which is often cited as an example of creatures adapting to their surroundings and genetics taking hold as a result of these adaptations:

people like the Duggers are people who go there

http://www.duggarfamily.com/

there was a show where their family went to the creation museum as a "science field trip" (they home school)... it made me laugh.

they also had a show where they went diamond hunting and told the person who ran the place that there was no way the diamonds he had carbon dated were as old as he said they were since the earth was not around then ::)

it makes me sad that there is a creation museum in Ohio but I suppose there are stupid people everywhere

Places like this exist for people who like to hear their beliefs repeated back to them. It reinforces their absurd ideas and validates them. It's the same reason why people listen to Rush Limbaugh - they like to exist in an echo chamber.

+1

Yeah, I meant to say this is a really concise and articulate point, Josh. +1 from me when I can.
