tips for a new guy

Recommended Posts

i'm new to the boards, and pretty new to vinyl collecting in general

just wondered if you guys could give me any tips on how not to be an asshole?

i'm not really sure where to get a good idea for what an album is selling for, i don't want to give ridiculously low bids for stuff, and i also don't want to screw myself by bidding too high

also any etiquette i should know about

thanks ahead of time

www.popsike.com is pretty good for old eBay auctions. Or you could just go to the completed auctions at the eBay site. Whichever.

Also, reckless.com (Reckless Records in Chicago) has a good selection of records, as well as some out of print stuff. I've bought a fair amount from there.

Welcome to the board!

are there any good brooklyn bands?

long island bands: Iron Pier Records: mindsetoverhaul.com

texas bands: Team Science Records: teamsciencerecords.com

louisville bands: Auxiliary Records: auxiliaryrecords.com

that's all i got for now.

welcome...in general people frown upon people buying records to flip on ebay.

don not ever refer to multiple records as "vinyl" the plural of vinyl is VINYL, this is a stupid point, but you'll get picked on big time...just to be safe just refer to them as records.

virgil is the nicest dude in punk rock.

In general, just a big HELL YES to this whole thing. Especially about Virgil.

yes.

I'm 100% not being sarcastic, enlighten me...I, for whatever reason, always gravitate towards long island bands.

also: sweet Chicago label that for the most part just puts out lots of rad records from bands not from Chicago: Lifeline Records: lifelinerecords.net

oh I'm not saying Long Island doesn't have good bands, they definitely do. Brooklyn doesn't have a lot but we do have some winners:

Dear Tonight

Young Hearts

a new-ish band called Stay Alive

The New Dress

Nakatomi Plaza

The Measure (SA) is partially from Brooklyn

Dynamite Arrows

another new band called The Reveling

Just buy what you are into, collect what you are into.

Usually if you low ball someone on something you are not sure about just tell em you are knew.

Usually what tells the price of the record is if it is in or out of print (OOP = out of print, in case you didnt know) OOP is obv rarer.

The run of the record usually can drive up the record, for example if you want to get from No Idea records and you see /3, that means the run is of three and is going to cost you some greens (if you can fucking find it)

Of course the popularity of the band/record label will drive up prices. NOFX records and most Fat Wreck records are pricey and difficult to get (again depending on the run)

Don't be afraid of sounding stupid, because we were all there and willing to help a new guy.

You get a +1 right off the bat for asking first on how to not be an asshole. More new members should follow his lead.
Totally agreed. By following most of the things found in this thread so far, and also most of the things in the guidelines thread, you should get along fine here. Welcome!
